2023 Golf R Interior

The interior of the VW Golf R is slick and contemporary and comes across as a premium German space ready for some sporty yet mature fun. The front seats are supportive, the dashboard layout is neat and uncluttered, and we appreciate the cabin's overall build quality and refinement. Getting in and out of the cabin is a cinch, and visibility is great all around. As with the rest of this car, the interior is a well-balanced space that feels as classy as it does sporty, and don't worry about tech features; you get the lot.

Seating and Interior Space

The interior of this performance hatchback is spacious and practical. The front seats are of the sport bucket variety and feature a 12-way power adjustable driver's seat with memory and ventilation. There's enough legroom and headroom in the front for taller passengers, and with a number of adjustable touchpoints, even taller drivers will find a comfy position. In the rear, passengers get 35 inches of legroom and 46 inches of hip room, which is about as much as rivals offer. The rear seats in the VW Golf R are heated and supportive enough, allowing three adult passengers to be seated - still, the rear middle seat won't do for extended periods.

Interior Colors and Materials

The interior of the Golf R is dark, and you don't get much choice in terms of upholstery colors. VW will let you have the R design Nappa leather seats in any color, as long as it's Titan Black. This somber interior setup is underscored by a leather steering wheel in the same hue, but stainless steel pedal caps are a highlight. The overall build quality is excellent, and although there are some cheaper plastic materials to be found, the overall result feels premium.

2023 Golf R Trunk and Cargo Space

This hatchback is a high-performance car and a practical daily driver that needs to be accommodating of your passengers and their stuff. Pop open the trunk and be greeted by an impressive 19.9 cubic feet. That's a ton of space for a hatchback and makes the Golf R one of the most practical tools in this class. The multi-level trunk floor adds even more usable space. Fold down the 60/40-split folding rear seat with center armrest and pass-through, and you get an even bigger 34.5 cubic feet of space.

Inside, you get the standard door pockets, glove box, cupholders, and center console storage bin for all your knick-knacks.

2023 Golf R Infotainment and Features

Features

This premium German hot hatch features enough luxury and modern tech to outshine competitors such as the Honda Civic Type R. In the front, you get heated and ventilated power seats covered in Nappa leather, a leather sport steering wheel that sits in front of a digital Cockpit Pro display, a head-up display, wireless charging, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and a Climatronic three-zone automatic climate control system with Air Care and with controls for back seat passengers. The outboard rear seats are also heated. The interior is made more vibrant via a 30-color adjustable ambient interior lighting system. There are also four USB-C charging ports around the cabin and wireless charging

Standard driver assistance systems include an active blind spot monitor, rear traffic alert, lane assist, a head-up display, front and rear park assist, adaptive cruise control, dynamic road sign display, and forward collision warning with autonomous emergency braking.

Infotainment

The Infotainment system is the central hub of any car's interior, so it comes as a disappointment that the VW Golf R's system isn't the most intuitive around. Still, you get all the tech features you'd expect in a modern premium car. There is a ten-inch color touchscreen display that features App-Connect with wireless capability, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, a proximity sensor, AM/FM/HD radio and voice control, and SiriusXM 360L with a three-month trial subscription. The standard sound system is a premium unit from Harman Kardon with nine speakers, and there are no options for further upgrades in this department.
