2021 Volvo S90 Review: Grand Splendor

by Aiden Eksteen

As the largest model in the brand's range, the 2021 Volvo S90 is a truly grand executive sedan with sophisticated styling. However, the Swedes do things a little differently than the Germans, so the S90 sedan is not as flashy as the BMW 5 Series, Mercedes-Benz E-Class, or even Audi A6. But don't let that fool you into thinking it can't compete with them. With a potent twin-turbocharged inline-4 engine under the hood, the Volvo has access to up to 316 horsepower, which the smooth-shifting 8-speed automatic transmission makes masterful use of. But make no mistake, this is a exec, not a speedster. Steady power delivery results in a serene ride, which is complemented by the stylish, spacious, and ergonomic cabin, and the long list of standard comfort and convenience features. But, in a segment that demands perfection, does Volvo bring enough to the table to go head to head with the European road royalty?

2021 Volvo S90 Changes: What’s The Difference vs The 2020 S90?

For the 2021 model year, Volvo enhances the S90 sedan with some indistinct exterior revisions and a few feature upgrades and additions. Along with a new front fascia, the S90 also sports a new Volvo badge and revised front fog lights. There are also new wheel designs and the rear fascia has also been revised along with the taillights and trunk lid spoiler. Owners of the S90 now also get to enjoy the pristine sound quality of a Bower & Wilkins audio system and are able to wirelessly charge their smartphones via a charging pad. Finally, the rear 12-volt power outlet has been replaced by two USB-C charging ports.

Verdict: Is the 2021 Volvo S90 A Good sedan?

While a powerful and engaging sedan is very compelling to many, there are some who will see the 2021 Volvo S90 and fall in love with its sophisticated and understated looks alone. And though it may not be the most entertaining vehicle to drive - the BMW 5 Series, Merc E-Class, and Audi A6 offering the more driver-centric experiences - it is sublimely comfortable and comes with an interior that affirms that you're getting your moneys worth in its opulence. The infotainment system, though a little complex, is really impressive and full of functionality. There are also loads of standard features as well as a comprehensive array of inclusive driver assists and safety systems. The IIHS's review of the 2021 Volvo S90 resulted in a first-rate safety rating, and the brand is well known for its reliability and commitment to excellence. If you're looking for a car that thrills, you'll want to look elsewhere, but if it's a serene and luxurious experience you're looking for, the S90 certainly won't disappoint.

What Volvo S90 Model Should I Buy?

The starting price of the 2021 Volvo S90 sedan line in the USA is $50,550, so you may want to think carefully before jumping to the top-spec Inscription. Even the Momentum comes standard with a phenomenal selection of features including full LED exterior lighting, a panoramic sunroof, and 18-inch alloy wheels for the exterior and power-adjustable and heated front seats, leather upholstery, and dual-zone automatic climate control for the interior. Volvo's 12.3-inch digital driver display and nine-inch infotainment touchscreen are awesome, the latter of which also comes inclusive of full smartphone integration. If you're compelled to go for a higher-tier model, we'd suggest going straight for the top-tier Inscription and avoiding the mid-spec R-Design, which is plagued by a stiffer ride quality and only gives you barely worthwhile handling improvements in return.
