2021 Volvo XC60 Recharge

2021 Volvo XC60 Recharge Review: A Class Apart

Volvo has christened all PHEV variants as 'Recharge' models, but the plug-in hybrid Volvo XC60 Recharge is still the same exceptional luxury compact crossover SUV we've always loved. Under the hood, you'll find Volvo's familiar T8 powertrain - a modified version of the 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that's both turbocharged and supercharged and paired to an electric motor for a total of 400 horsepower and 472 lb-ft of torque. This is enough for a five-second sprint to 60 mph, and an all-electric range of 19 miles, which puts it right in the same ballpark as competition such as the Audi Q5 Hybrid and BMW X3 Hybrid. But for those who want even more, the Polestar Engineered version dials up the powertrain with an additional 15 horses and enhanced driving dynamics. With nimble handling, a smooth drive, tons of safety, and a magnificent cabin, the XC60 Recharge is the antithesis to SUVs that try to be sports cars, which is perhaps what makes it so good.

2021 XC60 Recharge Hybrid Changes: 🚙What’s the difference vs 2020 XC60 Recharge?

For 2021, Volvo gives the T8-powered lineup a new name - all plug-in variants are now called Recharge models. There's also a new entry-level trim for the XC60 called the Inscription Expression, designed to make PHEV crossover tech more readily available with an attractive base price. Other updates include standard adaptive headlights, a hands-free tailgate, and rear USB-C charging ports.

Pros and Cons

XC60 Recharge Safety

Verdict: 🏁Is the 2021 Volvo XC60 Recharge Hybrid a good SUV?

In our previous review of the Volvo XC60 Recharge hybrid, we felt it was one of the best in this class, and with entry into the lineup now easier than before, we have even more reason to like it. Performance is pleasing, the drive is sporty enough for the class despite the added weight from the hybrid components, and the cabin is comfortable and serene. It's decently fuel-efficient too, with gas mileage figures of 57 MPGe; this compares favorably to the Audi Q5 hybrid's 50 MPGe but lags behind the BMW X3 xDrive30e's 60 MPGe. While all three rivals have a similar all-electric range, the XC60 by far outweighs the rest when it comes to powertrain specs, with the 362-hp Q5 hybrid coming closest to the Swede's 400 hp. We're big fans of the clean-cut elegance the Scandinavian designers have pulled off with the XC60 while still prioritizing superb levels of comfort. And, with a comprehensive safety suite, the XC60 Recharge's Top Safety Pick+ rating is well justified. This is a well-rounded vehicle as there's no compromise required in any particular area; the balance between luxury, performance, and efficiency comes together sweetly in one Swedish package, with the only downside being a higher price relevant to the competitors.

🚘What's the Price of the 2021 Volvo XC60 Recharge Hybrid?

Prices exclude a destination and handling fee of $1,095.
