2021 Volvo XC90 Recharge Review: Smooth, Quiet, Refined

The 2021 Volvo XC90 Recharge is another suave sport-utility vehicle that exudes class and sophistication. As with all of the Swedish automaker's cars, it offers scrupulous shoppers a prudent driving experience in a spacious and upscale cabin decked out with contemporary features. The midsize 5-door SUV can be set up to seat 6 or 7 passengers with its three rows of seating. The driving experience it delivers is ideal for hauling people and stuff, being solid but reserved. The Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid Coupe and even the Audi Q5 Hybrid are a lot more engaging and poised when it comes to driving enjoyment, but the 2021 XC90 Recharge's 400-horsepower twin-turbo hybridized inline04 engine still supplies plenty of impetus. This powertrain also accords the plug-in hybrid electric vehicle with superb gas mileage returns and a decent 18-mile all-electric driving range. These perks, along with Volvo's penchant for safety and, now, a more affordable entry model make the first-generation XC90 Recharge a really appealing offer in the USA.

XC90 Recharge Performance

Engine and Transmission

To augment the XC90 Recharge SUV's composure and serenity, Volvo employs a competent 2.0-liter twin-turbo 4-cylinder gas engine that's been supplemented by a single electric motor. The powertrain develops up to 400 hp and 472 lb-ft of torque, which is forwarded through an 8-speed automatic transmission to the SUV's all-wheel drivetrain. In terms of performance, the 2021 Volvo XC90 Recharge is really pleasant to drive with instantaneous electric power responses and smooth operation, but it's not very competitive or entertaining. Charging the plug-in hybrid will take around 2.5 hours on a 200-volt power outlet.

Verdict: Is the 2021 Volvo XC90 Recharge A Good SUV?

The XC90 Recharge SUV is a suave and contemporary-looking vehicle that delivers sophisticated performance and a premium experience with its commodious cabin and array of comforts and conveniences. It's not very entertaining to drive, however, so if you're looking for something a lot more fun and capable, the Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid Coupe is certainly a better option. This is not to say that the XC90 Recharge hybrid is slow. Kick the accelerator pedal to the floor and the SUV will launch from 0 to 60 mph in just over five seconds. It's also fairly fuel-efficient, with gas mileage returns of 27 mpg or 55 MPGe in combined driving cycles. The NHTSA's review of the 2021 Volvo XC90 Recharge returned leading safety results, too. For 2021, Volvo even lowered the price of the XC90 Recharge SUV with the introduction of the Inscription Expression, which is more than $3,500 more affordable than last year's entry-spec model and still comprehensively outfitted with creature comforts and conveniences. However, $63,450 is still a lot of money, but the XC90 Recharge is an exceptional family cruiser and certainly worth every penny.

What Volvo XC90 Recharge Model Should I Buy?

Volvo's new Inscription Expression packs oodles of value for its asking price of $63,450 and is certainly worth considering over the R-Design and top-spec Inscription. As with most Volvo cars, it looks suave and upscale in any of the premium colors presented, but Onyx Black and Crystal White really enhance its classy mien. You won't need to opt-in anything with the Expression, as it includes so much as standard already. Even its infotainment system is impressive, comprising a nine-inch touchscreen with complete smartphone integration, which is tethered to a high-performance ren-speaker surround sound system. It also comes with front seat heating, leather upholstery, and Volvo's full suite of driver-assist systems and safety features.
