Treat your family to something nice.
Luxury branded family cars don't make sense at a certain level because they will end up covered in discarded wrappers and food crumbs. For the budget-conscious buyers, our Family Fun finalists offer tremendous people-moving ability below $40,000, but the Family Luxury category has no price cap. These three finalists offer enough space to carry a family, a fun driving experience, and the same level of luxury that people without kids are entitled to.
The BMW X7 was the first winner of the Family Luxury Award, and this year, three new contenders join the battle. Some of the vehicles that just missed the cut this year include the BMW X5 M, Land Rover Defender, and Mercedes-AMG GLS 63. The winner of this year's award will be announced alongside the other nine winners on December 21, 2020.
Here are this year's finalists:
While not an all-new model, continual improvements over the years have ensured that the 2020 Volvo XC90 remains near the top of the luxury SUV segment, providing stellar value and top-notch technology. The XC90 is the perfect road trip car for a family with its massaging seats, ultra-soft suspension, and optional 19-speaker Bowers & Wilkins premium sound system. Volvo's Bowers & Wilkins audio is still among the best we've ever tested and the ideal choice for audiophiles.
Pilot Assist is one of the top semi-autonomous systems on the market, taking away the driver's stress on longer trips and keeping the whole family feeling secure. The XC90 is also the only finalist to offer a plug-in hybrid drivetrain with 400 horsepower and 18 miles of electric-only range.
Along with its GM counterparts, the Chevrolet Tahoe/Suburban and GMC Yukon, the 2021 Cadillac Escalade is one of the largest vehicles on the road. Its massive amount of interior space, especially in ESV form, is ideal for hauling cargo behind the third row without sacrificing passenger comfort. But the Escalade is more than only the biggest car on this list; it's all-new for the 2021 model year. Cadillac reinvented its flagship SUV with exquisite details such as curved OLED screens, Magnetic Ride Control suspension, and available Super Cruise.
The Escalade's 19-speaker AKG audio system almost matches the Volvo's sound quality, and a 36-speaker version is also available. With the ability to tow up to 8,100 pounds, the Escalade is also the best vehicle on this list to transport a whole family plus their boat.
The 2020 Audi A6 allroad serves as a reminder that SUVs are not the only vehicle capable of hauling around a family in luxury. Wagons used to be the preferred family road trip vehicle, and the allroad makes us wonder why that ever changed. It may not have a third row, but the five passengers who grab a seat in the allroad will enjoy a buttery soft air suspension, massaging seats in the front row, and beautiful ambient lighting at night.
Audi's base 16-speaker Bang & Olufsen 3D Premium Sound System packs a nice punch, but a more powerful 3D Advanced Sound version is available as well. As long as the lack of seven seats isn't an issue, the A6 allroad offers a sedan-like driving experience and SUV practicality.
