Even by Geneva standards, this year was amazing.
If you are an automaker with a brand new supercar or hypercar to reveal, the Geneva Motor Show is the place to be. And the 2019 show was one of the best ever for exotic metal, with carmakers placing a heavy emphasis on electrification as well as ballistic electric supercars from new manufacturers. Don't fret if you love the sound of gasoline exploding because there were plenty of traditional supercars as well.
How could we not start with Ferrari's replacement for the 488 GTB, the F8 Tributo? Ferrari revealing a new model is a big deal no matter when it happens and the F8 is no exception. This latest evolution of the 488 borrows the engine from the hardcore Pista model, which has now been tuned to produce 720 horsepower and 568 lb-ft of torque. 0-60 mph will take just 2.9 seconds and the aerodynamic efficiency has improved by 10%. It looks like Ferrari is ready to take the Mclaren 720S head-on.
Lamborghini graced Geneva with not one, but two new convertible supercars. The more "affordable" of the two is the Huracan Evo Spyder, which takes all of the suspension and interior upgrades of the coupe and adds in the drama of a drop top. The 5.2-liter V10 screams a 640 hp concerto and 0-62 mph takes just 3.1 seconds.
The Lamborghini Aventador may be getting on a bit in terms of age but it continues to impress us. This SVJ Roadster version is a limited edition sendoff for the Aventador, of which only 800 examples will be built. Power comes from a 6.5-liter V12 producing 770 hp and 0-60 takes just 2.9 seconds. If you are rich and love Lamborghini, this is the car for you.
Lamborghini wasn't the only company to bring two new supercars to Geneva, Aston Martin also arrived with two mid-engined concept cars. The Vanquish Vision Concept previews a future Ferrari F8 and McLaren 720S fighter. Although just a concept, Aston Martin says the new Vanquish will be powered by its new twin-turbo V6, which will debut in hybrid form in the next car on our list.
In addition to the Vanquish, Aston also showed off a third member of its new mid-engine engined family, the AM-RB 003. This car will essentially be a more road-friendly version of the Valkyrie, with a hybrid drivetrain mated to Aston's new V6 engine. Only 500 examples will be built with deliveries set for 2021.
It wasn't just the big-name automakers trying to make a splash at Geneva, the smaller boutique automakers also had some cool reveals. Ginetta, a small UK automaker, showed up with its new car called the Akula, which is Russian for "shark." Its V8 engine produces 575 hp, but the supercar makes up for its "lack" of power with a surprisingly low curb weight of just over 2,000 pounds. Only 20 will be built and 12 have already been spoken for.
It is now time to leave the dream world of supercars behind and enter the drug-induced fabrication that is the hypercar segment. Here, there is no engine too powerful, price tag too high, or speed record too outrageous. Bugatti decided to upstage everyone present at Geneva with a one-off called the La Voiture Noire, "The Black Car." At its core is the 8.0-liter quad-turbo W16 from the Chiron producing 1,479 hp. Even if you could afford this car's record-breaking $18 million price, it has already been sold to a "Bugatti enthusiast."
Bugatti may have shown up with the most expensive car at Geneva, but Koenigsegg delivered what could be the fastest. The all-new Koenigsegg Jesko is the long-awaited replacement for the Agera, which develops a whopping 1,280 hp from a twin-turbo V8 or 1,600 hp on E85. Koenigsegg says a 300 mph version of the Jesko will arrive later on and could claim the record of world's fastest car.
Rimac showed up this year with the successor to the Concept One, the C_Two. This all-electric hypercar produces a whopping 1,914 hp from four electric motors. The performance metrics are off the charts with a 0-60 mph time of 1.85 seconds, a 0-186 mph time of 11.8-seconds, and a range of 343 miles. Rimac says this world-changing hypercar should be ready by 2020.
Capping off this year's Geneva Motor Show is the most powerful car Italy has ever produced. It isn't a Lamborghini or a Ferrari but instead comes from the styling house known for making some of the prettiest cars of all time, Pininfarina. It's called the Battista and it marks the first time Pininfarina has decided to build a car of its own. It's quite a first effort because the Rimac-supplied chassis and electric powertrain provide 1,900 hp, enabling a 0-60 time of under two seconds and a range of around 280 miles. Only 50 of the 150 examples will be coming to the US, so there's a strong possibility you may never see this stunning electric hypercar.
