Rentals lots have plenty of fun cars to enjoy.
In the United States, most rental car agencies charge a premium to drivers under 25 years of age. And unless you meet the age requirement, forget about renting the exotic stuff .
Having just celebrated my 25th birthday, I wanted to check out some of the best cars available on rental car lots. While I spend most of my time behind the wheel of press cars, here are the cars you should look to rent when you celebrate your quarter-century.
The Chevy Corvette are at the top of the list of best rental cars because they are fast, have loads of trunk space, and are easily accessible. Most airport rental car fleets will have a row of Corvettes to rent, meaning they aren't difficult to find. The base Corvette is plenty fast, with a 6.2-liter V8 dishing out 455 horsepower. Some rental agencies even include a Z06 in their exotic fleet, which bumps the power up to 650 hp courtesy of a massive supercharger. Unfortunately, like most of the cars on this list, the Corvettes at the rental lot will most likely be automatic.
The Corvette is the king of rental car lots but if you need a back seat, the Chevy Camaro is the better option. Like the Vette, the Camaro is powered by a 6.2-liter V8 producing 455 hp. There's also V6 and turbocharged four-cylinder models, so be sure to ask for an SS at the counter. GM has even equipped the Camaro with a newer 10-speed automatic, which is smoother than the one in the Vette.
Some people just prefer Ford to General Motors, which is why the Ford Mustang comes next on the list. The Mustang has a nicer interior than the Camaro and feels more comfortable. The Mustang's 5.0-liter V8 in the GT model produces 460 hp, which goes out through the same 10-speed transmission found in the Camaro.
What's better than a Mustang? A Shelby Mustang. Sixt Rent A Car has recently introduced a new Shelby Mustang into its fleet, known as the GT-S. This Mustang raises output up to 600 hp with the addition of a supercharger. These cars will even be available to purchase once they have completed their service as rental cars.
Not every vacation requires a fast car. Sometimes you just want something big and capable to take to the beach or camping. Most rental car lots will have a Jeep Wrangler, which is a perfect choice for such an excursion. The Wrangler's off-road capability is unrivaled and you can take the roof and doors off.
For a special occasion, we recommend opting for an exotic car. These typically cost more to rent but the benefits speak for themselves. Who wouldn't want to cruise around in a Lamborghini for the day? There are smaller rental car agencies that specialize in exotics and Turo is always an option. Even the mainstreams companies like Enterprise stock exotics like the Jaguar F-Type SVR.
