It was only a matter of time before the team at Hennessey Performance got their hands on the Dodge Demon. The street-legal drag car is already a force to be reckoned with in stock form thanks to its 6.2-liter Hemi V8 engine producing 840 horsepower, enabling it to hit 0-62 mph in just 2.3 seconds and complete the quarter-mile in 9.65 seconds. Hennessey, however, has taken it to another level by increasing the output to 1,000 horses. It's the very definition of "excessive," and we wouldn't have it any other way.
To test Hennessey's first HPE1000 Demon, the tuner hooked up the upgraded muscle car to a dyno to see what it can do. As you can see in the video, the car produced 880 hp and 806 lb-ft of torque at the wheels during its tire-torturing session at the dyno. Factoring in an estimated 20 percent drivetrain loss, the crank horsepower is rated at 1,056 hp and 967 lb-ft of torque.
That's a considerable power increase, as Hennessey's Demon has 216 more horsepower than the standard car. According to the video, the power was achieved using the race-spec ECU included in the Demon Crate, which unlocks the Demon's potential and lets the car run on unleaded race gas to make 840 horses.
Other upgrades include a high-flow upper supercharger pulley, a high-flow lower crankshaft pulley, HPE engine management software, and stainless steel long tube headers with high-flow catalytic converters. It's worth watching the dyno test video for the sound alone – the combination of the screaming supercharger and growling V8 is earth-shattering. With even more power to play with, you would expect to see an improvement in the Demon's straight-line performance. And you'd be right. To show how much quicker the HPE1000 Demon is than the stock model, Hennessey has released a new video showing it complete the quarter mile in 9.38 seconds at 146 mph.
That makes it 0.17 seconds quicker and six mph faster than the stock Demon at the drag strip. If that wasn't already impressive, Hennessey claims it also hit 62 mph in an astonishing 1.93 seconds from a standstill. Excuse us while we pick up our jaws off the floor.
