No, its not a 911. But it does have a turbo!
Renault recently announced preorders for the new Alpine A120, a new sports car to rival the likes of the Porsche 718 Cayman and Alfa Romeo 4C. This new sports car will be the first of many for Alpine, Renault's luxury brand, which may also make it to the US. However, instead of waiting for this brand to make it across the ocean, why not buy an awesome Alpine sports car that is already for sale in the US? We found a really cool 1988 Renault Alpine GTA Turbo on the Bring A Trailer auction site, and it's cheaper than first anticipated.
We expected something so rare and exotic to be at least $20,000, but the current bid sits at just $11,111. The car is located in Austin, Texas, and like the website's title states, you have to bring a trailer to go pick it up. Spending $11,000 on a car you've never heard of may sound a bit silly, but the Alpine seems like it may actually be worth the money. The car has around 42,000 miles on it and was recently given a repaint and a refreshed interior with new seats that appear to be out of a Mazda RX-8. The car is powered by a rear-mounted 2.5-liter turbocharged V6 paired to a five-speed manual transmission. The seller says that an engine-out service was performed in 2015 and the front suspension was rebuilt.
Clearly a lot of work was done on this car, but we imagine that owning it would not be a pain-free experience. However, the 2.5-liter V6 was shared with models from Peugeot, Citroen, Volvo, and DeLorean, so it may not be impossible to find parts for. That V6 does make around 200 horsepower, so the Alpine is no slouch when it comes to performance. For $11,000, there isn't really anything out there that's in this good condition with such an exotic layout. A beat-up 996 might be comparable, but the Alpine is much more unique.
