1928 MG 14/40 MkIV Buried Underground for Decades Resurrected

The rare two-seater sports car was painstakingly rebuilt to award-winning quality.

In 1999, all the parts of this 1928 MG MkIV sports car were found "carefully dismantled" buried under a cowshed in Gloucestershire, UK. Car enthusiast Fred Body, who spent over a year meticulously rebuilding the early MG, said: "It's weird really - most of it was there and most of it was as sound as a pound. "When it was found it was completely taken apart, laid out flat and covered in gravel and one or two inches of concrete."

Only 135 models were built in 1928 according to the Early MG Society, and it is believed that the original owner took the drastic steps of taking the car apart and burying it in order to stop the car being taken for scraps for the war efforts. "They carefully took it apart and buried it thinking they would come back and put it together again." The car was discovered with original number plates and all its other identification including a Guarantee plate. Some of the original leather and paintwork remained so Body was able to color match the car.

Cow urine had corroded the aluminum and all the instruments were gone, presumably taken by the owner for safe keeping. After tracking down replacement parts and duplicate instruments Body managed to resurrect the vintage MG. It is now the sole survivor in the UK displaying the correct coachwork. The successful ground up restoration recently won the Best Vintage Car award at the UK's Bristol Classic Car Show, and the Early MG Society said of the car: "It is now one of the few genuine MGs that has come to light in the last 25 years."
