1964 Ford GT40 Prototype Sells for $7M

Took part in 1965 Le Mans.

A rare 1964 Ford GT40 prototype went under the hammer at Mecum’s Houston auction over the weekend and sold for $7 million. The GT/104 prototype raced at Le Mans, piloted by Jo Schlesser and Richard “Dickie” Atwood, but was forced to retire after catching fire. It was also just one of two models prepared by Shelby American for the 1965 season. The car didn’t enjoy much success on the track, but plays an important role in the GT40’s history and was lovingly restored by GT40 specialist Paul Lanzante.
