The 2009 Pontiac Torrent is a virtually unchanged larger compact SUV that offers good value based on its affordable price and size. The Torrent handles and accelerated well, however, it's not as sporty as it claims to be and fuel economy is disappointing for a compact SUV. The base Torrent is powered with a 3.4-liter 185 horsepower V6 engine, while the higher GXP gets a 3.6-liter V6.
The Torrent's exterior styling is somewhat sporty, but doesn't bring too many positive or negative reactions. Simply put, it's pleasant but doesn't stand out. The vehicle's spacious cabin is one of its strengths, though. The Torrent is able to seat up to five passengers comfortably, and unlike most SUVs, the Torrent is very easy to get into. Still, one of the persisting complaints is over the use of sub-par materials that are found all over the cabin.
