Mazda is set to make its world premiere of the 2012 model year of the Mazda3 at the 2011 Canadian International Auto Show in Toronto. To set up the stage, Mazda has released the first photos and details on the new sedan and five-door hatchback models. What is noticeable is that the refreshed Mazda3 has received some cosmetic changes and has gained the automaker's new Skyactiv-G gasoline engine and Skyactiv-Drive automatic transmission.

Mazda still hasn't released specific details on the new powertrains, but it's said that this is the first application of the automaker's Skyactive engine and transmission technologies in a production vehicle. What's known is that the engine will feature direct-injection technology and a high compression ratio, while the transmission is supposed to be compact in size and lightweight. It also receives redesigned front and rear bumpers with a redesigned front grille, fog bezels and front headlamps. We can expect to see the new Mazda3 in U.S. showrooms starting this fall.
