2014 Lexus IS Unveiled in Detroit

/ Comments

The new IS sedan has been revealed at the Detroit Auto Show and it's just as aggressive seen in the metal as we had hoped.

When Lexus revealed the all-new IS sedan last week in F Sport trim, it rightly received plenty of positive feedback. And with the Japanese carmaker pulling the sheets off the sports sedan in Detroit we expect even more words of praise for what is undoubtedly Lexus's most aggressively designed mass-market vehicle to date. Adopting the LF-CC concept design into four-door sedan form, the new third-generation IS sports a front end dominated by the iconic spindle grille and new headlight cluster design with Lexus' trademark L-shaped daytime running lights.

The 2014 Lexus IS will be available in rear- and all-wheel drive and with 2.5-liter V6 and 3.5-liter V6 units. An IS300h hybrid model was also at the reveal, odd given it won't be coming stateside with Lexus earmarking the car for Japan, Europe and other markets. Performance figures are yet to be revealed, but with a quick-shifting eight-speed automatic transmission taken from the existing IS F Sport model, full torque converter lockup and manual mode throttle blips, we expect them to be impressive. Even more so when combined with Lexus' new G force Artificial Intelligence (G-AI) control, selectable in Sport mode.

This system selects the optimal gear and downshift pattern in response to G force automatically, while maintaining the selected gear through a corner. As per other new Lexus models, such as the GS, the IS adopts the marque's multilink rear suspension and electric power steering. A three-inch longer wheelbase coupled with a thinner front seat design and broader stance make for a roomier cabin that comes with 60/40 split/folding rear seats, and more trunk space. Staying inside, and all IS models come with the next-gen navigation multimedia system and new steering wheel from where the meter cluster and center console can be controlled.

Safety features include Blind Spot Monitor, Lane Departure Alert and Automatic High Beam, a headlamp system that automatically switches to low beam when the camera detects oncoming or preceding vehicle's lights. All 2014 IS models will hit dealerships in June, including the IS F Sport, distinguished by a unique spindle grille and bumpers and LFA-inspired Y-spoke 18-inch alloys, and that comes with specially tuned suspension and exclusive interior trim detailing.
