With seven and eight-speed automatics becoming the norm in various models offered by American automakers, it seems that Ford and General Motors are getting ready to up the ante in their transmission battle. According to Automotive News, GM and Ford are now cooperating to develop a 10-speed automatic gearbox, which will begin its integration in trucks and SUVs like the Lincoln Navigator and Ford F-150 and trickle its way down to various upcoming models, including the 2015 Mustang.

The new gearbox is expected to make its debut in the F-150 at the end of next year, with the Mustang following suit later on. It's unclear which GM models, if any, will be the first to receive this transmission.
