US automakers are gearing up for the battle of the gearbox.
Withseven and eight-speed automatics becoming the norm in various models offered byAmerican automakers, it seems that Ford and General Motors are getting ready toup the ante in their transmission battle. According to Automotive News, GM andFord are now cooperating to develop a 10-speed automatic gearbox, which will begin its integration in trucks and SUVs like the Lincoln Navigator and Ford F-150 and trickle its waydown to various upcoming models, including the 2015 Mustang.
The new gearbox is expected to make its debut in the F-150 at the end ofnext year, with the Mustang following suit later on. It's unclear which GMmodels, if any, will be the first to receive this transmission.
