2015 Mustang to Pack Turbo Four?

EcoBoost Mustang could pack 310 horsepower from the same engine as the upcoming Focus RS.

As its 2013 New York Auto Show reveal gets closer, the internet has been full of rumors regarding the next-generation Ford Mustang. We already know that the next Mustang will ride on a new rear-wheel-drive platform complete with an independent rear suspension, ditching the solid rear axle setup. Still, overall dimensions will likely be similar to the current car, but with a decidedly anti-retro design taking some cues from the Evos concept which Ford displayed in Frankfurt last year. Now the rumors are circulating of its potential powertrain options.

Currently the Mustang is available with a 3.7-liter V6 or a 5.0-liter V8, following the path set down by previous iterations of the pony car. But with Ford pushing its EcoBoost technology, the Mustang could get a 2.0-liter turbo four option with around 250 horsepower. The reason? Ford wants the new Mustang to be a global car and a smaller engine will be required for markets with more stringent fuel economy regulations. However, a report coming from Mustangs Daily is now claiming that instead of the previously rumored 2.0 unit, Ford plans to use the still under development 2.3-liter EcoBoost four-pot that can produce as much as 310 horsepower.

For comparison's sake, the 3.7-liter V6 in the current base Mustang produces 305 horsepower. This new EcoBoost four will also likely power the upcoming Focus RS. Fuel economy is also said to be around 34 mpg. If this turns out to be the next Mustang's long rumored four-cylinder then enthusiasts around the globe could be pleased after all.
