On the eve of the New York Auto Show next week, Audi plans to host a global reveal of a new Audi Sport model away from the crowds at Jacob K. Javits Convention Center. We already know that the German automaker will bring the all-new 2019 A6 and rear-wheel-drive Audi R8 RWS to New York next week. However, it also plans a surprise, which we believe could be the much anticipated entry-level R8 powered by Porsche's 2.9-liter twin-turbo V6 engine. If so, the new R8 could go on sale as early as later this year for 2019.

As we previously reported, the R8 is set receive a new twin-turbo V6 engine as a replacement for the discontinued 4.2-liter V8 model. Currently, the R8 is only available with a 5.2-liter V10. The smaller V6 powerplant would be lifted from the Porsche Panamera 4S. In the Porsche, the 2.9-liter twin-turbo six makes 440 horsepower, but it's expected to make over 500 hp once it's fitted to the Audi R8. Rumors suggest torque figures will also be 500 lb-ft or more. Further, the V6 will be offered in more than just a single tune to widen its performance breadth, bringing it within hitting distance of the current V10's 540-hp output rating.

With the new powertrain, expect prices for new R8s to be considerably more affordable. The current V10-powered model starts at $165,000. A new V6 model could chop tens of thousands off that price while weighing less and offering similar performance. Audi did not confirm the model for New York, but we will know for sure what the German luxury automaker has in store next Tuesday.
