You don't need leather trim to get 1,000 lb-ft of twist.
The sky's the limit when it comes to spec'ing out full-size pickups. Ford's shown that much with the $100,000 F-Series Super Duty Limited, and FCA certainly offers its fair share of luxed-out trucks as well. But you don't need to take all the bells and whistles to get your hands on the new Ram HD and its headline-grabbing diesel engine.
Towards the bottom of the range is the new 2019 Ram 3500 Tradesman – a trim level which, as fleet customers already know, does without the leather and wood to leave just the work-a-day truck underneath.
The Ram 3500 Tradesman does with hand-cranked windows, vinyl floors, and either cloth or vinyl upholstery. It eschews the fancy UConnect display for a 3.5-inch grayscale screen. The 17-inch wheels are made of bare steel. And simple black trim replaces the usual chrome as standard.
The Tradesman model comes with a regular two-door cab, a long bed, rear drive and either a single or dual rear axle , but buyers can still choose between gasoline or diesel engines. The 6.4-liter Hemi V8 kicks out 410 horsepower and 429 lb-ft of torque through an eight-speed automatic to tow as much as 7,680 pounds.
Opt for the 6.7-liter Cummins turbodiesel straight six and its mated to a six-speed automatic, though, and you get almost as much power (at 400 hp) but over twice as much torque (at 1,000 lb-ft) – good to tow as much as 35,100 pounds (properly equipped).
You can, incidentally, also get the Ram 2500 in Tradesman trim, starting at $33,395 (plus destination) – but not with the diesel. That only kicks in with the 3500 version. And while we've yet to see a precise pricing breakdown, you can spend a solid $67,050 on a fully loaded Ram 3500 Limited Mega Cab 4x4.
