The new fifth-generation Ram 1500 has been on the market for almost a year now, bringing with it all manner of enhancements and improvements over the model it replaced. The heavy-duty version has had to wait, and so have its heavy-duty buyers – but they won't have to wait much longer.

FCA's truck brand released this teaser video ahead of the new Ram HD's reveal tomorrow at the 2019 Detroit Auto Show. And while it doesn't give us a whole lot to go on, it does promise that the new professional-grade truck will be "the most capable heavy duty pickup ever."

That's quite the claim, considering the competition from the likes of the Ford F-Series Super Duty, Chevy Silverado HD, and GMC Sierra HD (less so from the in-between Nissan Titan XD). But the boys in Auburn Hills evidently feel comfortable asserting that their challenger will outclass them all.

Just by what standard they use to define the term "capable," we don't know. But the outgoing Ram 3500 already boasts a payload capacity up to 7,350 pounds, towing capability of over 30,000 pounds, and as much as 410 horsepower and 930 lb-ft of torque (depending on configuration).

We can expect the new Ram HD to surpass those figures, and introduce many (if not all) of the improvements made to the light-duty Ram to the heavy-duty model as well. It'll be particularly interesting to see whether FCA will extend the mild-hybrid eTorque system – offered in the Ram 1500 with either the 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 or the 5.7-liter Hemi V8 – to the bigger version. The outgoing Ram HD is available with neither of those engines, offering instead a larger 6.4-liter Hemi or the 6.7-liter Cummins diesel six. Neither are lacking for punch, but a little more (with improved fuel economy) could never hurt.
