2019 Toyota 86 TRD Edition Boosts Handling Without More Power

Reveal / 24 Comments

Think of it as a near carbon copy of the Subaru BRZ’s performance pack.

As the Toyota 86 (formerly Scion FR-S) and its corporate twin, the Subaru BRZ, approach the end of their respective life cycles, now's the time to offer the very best factory-built versions available. Subaru has already done this with the optional performance package, and now Toyota has literally done the same. Introducing the Toyota 86 TRD Special Edition, limited to only 1,418 examples.

But first things first: this package does not add any extra power to the naturally aspirated 2.0-liter Boxer four. Output remains 205 hp and 156 lb-ft of torque. That said, the TRD Special Edition does offer a host of performance enhancements that are nearly a carbon copy of the BRZ's package.

For starters, stiffer Sachs shocks are there to improve steering response while Brembo brakes with four-piston front calipers and two-piston rear calipers improve stopping performance. In addition there's a TRD body kit and side decals, TRD exhaust system with stainless steel tips, and 18-inch alloy wheels wearing sticky Michelin Pilot Sport 4 summer tires. The sole exterior color? Black.

The interior also receives a few enhancements, such as a red and black-trimmed steering wheel, red contrast stitching, and red and black sport bucket seats. There's even fake suede dash trim instead of the standard plastic. Of course, there's also TRD badges on the dash and seat belts. Pricing begins at $32,420 and will be available, on a limited basis of course, in dealerships beginning next month. The regular 2019 Toyota 86 will go on sale at the same time.
