Well this is a pleasant surprise. We already knew the BMW M550i is getting more power, but BMW has also silently given the X3 M40i and X4 M40i a significant power and torque increase for the 2020 model year thanks to a slew of new engine improvements.

Speaking to Motor Authority, BMW spokesman Oleg Satanovsky confirmed the 2020 M550i sedan's twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 will increase from 456 hp and 480 lb-ft of torque in 2019 to 523 hp and 553 lb-ft in 2020. Impressively, that's a boost of nearly 15 percent. This was achieved thanks to a revised engine with larger turbochargers, an improved intake manifold and ports, higher fuel pressure, a stronger block, reinforced pistons, and new engine management.

As for the X3 and X4 M40i crossovers, the outputs will increase from 355 hp to 382 hp in 2020. This 15-percent increase was achieved due to increased boost pressure, revised engine management, and upgraded exhaust components. While the X3 and X4 M40i share the same engine as many other 40i-branded BMWs such as the 540i, X6, 740i, and 840i, these models won't get the same power increase for 2020.

It isn't known how this power increase will affect the performance, but the 2019 M550i will sprint from 0-62 mph in 3.6-seconds and reach a limited top speed of 155 mph. The 2019 BMW X3 and X4 M40i, on the other hand, need just 4.9 seconds to complete the same sprint and also top out at 155 mph.

There is a downside, however. While the 2020 BMW M550i, X3 and X4 M40i have more power on tap, they will also be more expensive than last year's model. The base price for the M550i has increased by $2,200 due to equipment changes such as an active rear differential and heated seats. while the base prices for the X3 and X4 M40i have also increased by $1,250 and $550 respectively and also include small equipment changes.
