As much as we love the fetching Jaguar F-Type, it's getting a bit long in the tooth, having been on sale since 2013. That means either a replacement or a major update is necessary to keep Jaguar's flagship sports car fresh and competitive. Thankfully, a new model is due to arrive in 2020 with some big changes – and our spies have sent us the first photos of the new F-Type prototype undergoing testing at the Nurburgring in both coupe and convertible guises.

While the next-generation F-Type is expected to be underpinned by the same aluminum platform as the current model, the exterior has been overhauled for the new decade. While the prototypes are covered in camouflage, we can see a slew of styling changes that make the F-Type look fresher and more modern, including slimmer headlights positioned further down the front fascia, more angular intakes, and a new grille with a different mesh pattern that makes the front look like an Audi R8. At the back, the new F-Type features thinner taillights that look similar to those found on the electric I-Pace and quad exhaust pipes.

The quad exhaust pipes indicate the V8 R version of the F-Type is being tested. Yes, don't worry, the rumored all-electric F-Type won't be replacing the combustion-powered version. In the current model, the supercharged V8 generates 550 horsepower and 502 lb-ft of torque, enabling the F-Type to sprint from 0-62 mph in just 3.9 seconds. However, rumors suggest the current 5.0-liter V8 will be replaced with a BMW-sourced 4.4-liter turbocharged V8. A 2+2 seat version of the new F-Type is also allegedly on the cards to help Jaguar compete against the Porsche 911, but these prototypes sport a 2-seat layout.

Unfortunately, we weren't sent any photos of the updated cabin, but reports claim the 2020 F-Type's interior will incorporate more advanced technologies, digital dials, infotainment features, and more premium materials. Expect the interior design to be lifted from the I-Pace and updated XE sedan. No word yet on when Jaguar will reveal the new 2020 F-Type, but we're expecting it to debut later this year at Frankfurt or LA, or possibly early next year at the Geneva Motor Show.
