While the new 2020 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray has been stealing all the spotlight lately, Ford has been slowly drip-feeding us details about the new 2020 Mustang Shelby GT500. The Blue Oval automaker recently confirmed the new GT500's 5.2-liter supercharged V8 produces a Hellcat-crushing 760 horsepower and 625 lb-ft of torque, making it the most powerful street-legal Ford ever.

This setup enables the monster muscle car to hit 0-62 mph in around 3.5 seconds, do the quarter-mile in less than 11 seconds, and hit a limited top speed of 180 mph. Now, Ford has confirmed the 2020 GT500 will do 0-100-0 mph in just 10.6 seconds.

In addition to the powerful V8 under the hood, the 2020 GT500's supercar-rivaling acceleration is achieved thanks partly to Ford's new 7-speed dual-clutch transmission developed in collaboration with Tremec, which offers lightning-fast shifting and greater performance for different driving scenarios. In sport mode, the gearbox executes shifts as quick as 80 milliseconds.

"In many ways, this is like having two transmissions in one," Pat Morgan, Ford Performance powertrain manager, explained. "On one hand, it enables performance at the outer reaches of straight-line quickness with minimal torque interruption, yet provides an incredible amount of finesse and control in track environments for maximum stability and predictability at the limits of lateral acceleration."

The transmission adapts depending on the drive mode selected, which also tailors the ride dampening, stability control, antilock brake modulation, and steering feel for road or track driving. In normal mode, for example, the system selects gears and shift timing for "moderated, everyday driving and seamless shifting," while sport mode reduces shift times by around 20 percent and increases the throttle response and rpm ranges. Selecting track or drag mode further changes the shifting to deliver maximum performance by using "over-torque" shifts for uninterrupted power delivery. When turning, the transmission adapts with smooth, quick and seamless shifts.

Another key factor that helps the 2020 GT500 accelerate from 0-100-0 mph in 10.6 seconds is the Brembo brakes that deliver immense stopping power. Featuring 16.5-inch rotors, Ford claims the 2020 GT500 boasts the largest front brakes of any domestic sports coupe. Carbon-fiber wheels are also available wrapped in Ford Performance-spec Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires.

Deliveries for the 2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 will start this fall, with price starting at $73,995.
