The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Cargo Van is sold in the US as a more luxurious alternative to the Ford Transit Cargo. While the current model is offered with either a four-cylinder gas engine or a V6 diesel that both develop 188 horsepower, Mercedes-Benz is expanding the engine lineup for the 2021 Cargo Sprinter with the introduction of a new, more frugal 2.0-liter four-cylinder diesel engine.

Paired with a seven-speed automatic transmission, this new diesel engine is rated at 161 hp and 266 lb-ft of torque. Arriving in dealerships later this year, the 2.0-liter four-cylinder diesel Cargo variant will be offered with rear-wheel drive and several wheelbase options, including the 144-inch wheelbase standard roof.

Alternatively, the Sprinter Cargo Van is available with a 170-inch wheelbase and a 170-inch extended wheelbase high roof offering more cargo space, with a capacity of up to 533 cu.ft. Compared to other variants in the Mercedes Cargo Sprinter lineup, the new four-cylinder diesel variant offers lower fuel consumption and emissions, as well as high torque and high elasticity at low speeds.

As standard, the four-cylinder diesel Cargo Van includes the Mercedes PRO connect technology suite, which features brake hold functionality, two USB-C sockets in the dashboard for charging, a trailer hitch prep package, a load adaptive electronic stability program, all-season tires, an adjustable steering wheel with paddle shifters, and a metal load compartment floor.

Since it was redesigned for 2019, the Mercedes Sprinter is equipped with a range of optional safety and assistance systems that were usually reserved for Mercedes-Benz passenger cars such as the S-Class, including radar-based distance assist, active brake assist, and active lane keeping assist. An optional parking package with a 360-degree camera is also available. Like the company's passenger cars, the Mercedes Cargo Sprinter four-cylinder diesel also comes equipped with the new MBUX infotainment system with intelligent voice control.

Pricing for the 2020 Mercedes Cargo Sprinter four-cylinder diesel starts at $38,770 for the 144-inch wheelbase variant, $44,100 for the 170-inch wheelbase, and $45,950 for the 170-inch extended wheelbase with high roof.
