2020 Mercedes GLE Coupe Set To Break Cover

Teaser / Comments

And it has the new BMW X6 firmly in its sights.

Mercedes will have a major presence at the 2019 Frankfurt Auto Show next month, with new model debuts including the hot AMG GLB, along with new plug-in hybrid models, the EQV electric van, and a mystery new concept car. A few weeks before the show starts, Mercedes has posted a teaser video of yet another new model: the 2020 GLE Coupe. And it's going to break cover very soon.

Posted on the automaker's Facebook page, the teaser shows the GLE Coupe's sleek new taillight design. Illuminating the top of the trunk also reveals a secret message: "Date of Birth 28.08.2019." This suggests the new GLE Coupe will break cover on August 28. That's tomorrow, so we don't have long to wait. It will also likely make its public debut at Frankfurt 2019, where it will go head to head with its main rival, the new BMW X6, which is also making its public debut.

While the teaser doesn't give much away, we already have a good idea what the 2020 GLE Coupe will look like thanks to recent spy shots. The body still resembles the "stylish" SUV but a longer wheelbase means it will be larger than its predecessor and offer more interior space, although the sloping roofline may sacrifice some rear headroom and cargo space. Also, expect the interior to be upgraded with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 12.3-inch infotainment system with the latest Mercedes MBUX technology.

Engine options should carry over from the regular Mercedes GLE SUV, including a 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder engine with 255 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque, and a mild-hybrid setup incorporating a V8 engine delivering 362 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque. In the regular GLE, these engines are paired to a nine-speed automatic transmission. Hardcore AMG and AMG S variants will also join the lineup, including a GLE 63 Coupe with 603 hp and 627 lb-ft of torque in the range-topping S model.
