From mobile phones to television sets, we're wired to want the latest and greatest devices on offer. But technology moves at a rapid pace, and in the automotive world, it can be rather deflating to find out that a newer model has features or capabilities that yours doesn't. Fortunately, software updates for cars are changing this picture considerably.

In August last year, the 2021 version of the Taycan electric sedan was introduced, followed by a cheaper RWD model. Now, owners of the 2020 model can upgrade their vehicle software to enjoy some of the features of the newer 2021 Taycan. Improved performance and the addition of wireless Apple CarPlay are just two of the improvements.

Along with Apple CarPlay, Apple Music Lyrics and Apple Podcasts can be accessed by linking your Apple ID to the Taycan. The navigation system will be able to share even more information with the driver such as lane-specific info and in-depth traffic info. It will also be easier to search for nearby charging stations. Porsche has added some other smart charging features, too; using the Charging Planner allows customers to pre-select a desired state of charge when connected to DC fast charging.

To increase the lifespan of the battery, DC charging power can now be reduced from 270 kW to 200 kW. A more minor addition is customizable ambient lighting linked to the music being played in the Taycan.

If your Taycan is fitted with an adaptive air suspension, the software update will include Smartlift, a feature that lifts the body to ensure sufficient clearance when encountering speed bumps or especially steep driveways. So-called Functions on Demand (FoD) like active lane-keep assist and Porsche InnoDrive - linked to the adaptive cruise control system - will be available following the upgrade.

Although no performance figures were indicated, Porsche says that the software upgrade includes a recalibration of the control units for the Taycan's suspension and powertrain, leading to improvements in performance and dynamics. The 2020 Taycan software upgrade will take around two business days to finish and is free of charge. Porsche will be in touch with customers to arrange a suitable time to visit a dealer and proceed with the update.
