The latest generation Toyota Corolla and Toyota Corolla Hatchback are the most attractive and sporty examples of the nameplate since the rear-wheel-drive AE86 back in the 1980s. In a recent test of the 2019 Corolla Hatchback, we were pleasantly surprised by the sporty feel of the 168 horsepower four-cylinder engine, which was mated to an enjoyable six-speed manual transmission. The new Corolla platform is an exciting one and we continue to hold out hope for the rumored hot hatchback version with more power.

Although it may not be quite what we were hoping for the 2020 model year, Toyota is introducing a special Nightshade Edition package for the Corolla Hatchback and Sedan. This makes six Toyota models now available with the Nightshade Edition package including the 4Runner, Camry, Highlander, and Sienna.

So, what's included in the Nightshade Edition Package? For starters, the Toyota, Corolla, and SE badges are all blacked out, as are the grille surround, rocker panels, mirrors, window trim, door handles, spoiler, rear diffuser, sharkfin antenna, and 18-inch wheels. Buyers will have a choice of three colors including Super White, Classic Silver Metallic, and Black Sand Pearl. Toyota has based the package on the Corolla SE Sedan with the CVT (sorry, no manual is offered) starting at $22,750. This is an increase of $700 over a standard Corolla SE CVT.

Toyota will also offer the package on the Corolla Hatchback, which now enters the 2020 model year like its sedan counterpart. The hatchback is also based on the SE CVT grade and carries a starting price of $22,290. There is no performance upgrade but both models do look more aggressive with the blacked-out accents.

2020 also brings some important changes to the Corolla Hatchback. Apple CarPlay was already available in 2019 but the 2020 model will now add Android Auto on all grades. Sirius XM radio, previously an optional extra, will now be standard on SE and XSE.

Toyota has also added a black roof option, previously found on the Camry, and can be paired with Blizzard Pearl, Oxide Bronze, Classic Silver Metallic, Smoked Paprika, and Blue Flame paint. There will also be an enhanced cargo space option, which removes the spare tire and lowers the cargo floor. This adds six cubic feet of cargo capacity, which the Corolla sorely needed. If you opt for the enhanced cargo space option, Toyota will include a tire repair kit in lieu of a spare tire.
