The production start date has been revealed.
It was last September when the Multi-Flex tailgate was revealed as a feature for the 2021 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. At the time, we were told Chevy's version of GMC's MultiPro tailgate won't be available until sometime in early 2021. Today, more precise information has come to light regarding the on-sale dates. GM Authority claims it has information from sources familiar with the automaker's marketing plans that customer orders for the Multi-Flex tailgate officially opened last week on December 17.
However, production isn't slated to get underway until February. To be clear, these two tailgates are exactly the same and differ in branding name only. GMC's version has been on sale for several months already, so it's possible for interested Chevy buyers to check it out its many cool features right now.
This new aluminum-constructed tailgate has a weight capacity of 375 pounds and offers six unique functions, enables easier access to the bed cargo, and improves loading solutions in general. It can even be used as a standalone workstation. Owners can activate its different configurations simply by using a key fob or two tailgate-mounted buttons. There's even an optional built-in Bluetooth-connected speaker for those who want to listen to music while working.
Other extremely useful features include LED lighting, a 120-volt outlet, and 12 fixed tie-downs. The Multi-Flex tailgate will be available on all Silverado trims, not just the priciest of the bunch. This should be highly appealing to Work Truck customers.
Compared to the outgoing 2020 model, some versions of the 2021 Silverado offer improved trailering capability. For example, the 2.7-liter turbo-four-powered, RWD Crew Cab Short towing capability increases by 2,500 pounds to 9,300 pounds. There's also the new Regular Cab Long Box that further increases towing to 9,600 pounds and maximum payload to 2,280 pounds in 2WD. The optional 3.0-liter Duramax turbo-diesel tacks on an extra 1,900 pounds of trailering capacity to nearly every configuration. What's more, oil burners receive a $1,500 price cut for 2021.
The 2021 Chevy Silverado is already in dealerships nationwide and Multi-Flex-equipped examples are coming soon.
