Mercedes revealed the high-powered AMG version of its GLE SUV late last year and now the company has unveiled the coupe version. Introducing the 2021 Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 S Coupe, a 603 horsepower SUV of epic proportions. As with the standard GLE 63 SUV, the Coupe will only be available in S guise packing a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 paired with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system adding 21 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque.

Total output is rated at 603 hp and 627 lb-ft of torque which is routed to AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel-drive through a nine-speed automatic transmission. 0-60 mph takes just 3.7 seconds and Mercedes estimated the top speed at 174 mph.

Most of the changes on the GLE 63 S Coupe are found on the exterior where a more coupe-like roofline departs from the standard GLE design. This AMG variant is equipped with a dynamic jet-wing design front painted in body color with black air intakes and the familial Panamericana-style front grille. Side skirts, exterior mirror housings, and flared wheel arches are painted in the vehicle color and add to the aggressive look. As standard, the GLE 63 S Coupe rides on 22-inch AMG wheels but other options are available.

Inside, the cockpit looks identical to the standard GLE 63, which is good news. Exclusive Nappa leather comes standard while other materials are also available and the cabin comes alive at night with standard ambient lighting. The excellent MBUX infotainment system is housed on a central touchscreen with a large screen in front of the driver to replace traditional analog gauges. This AMG version features an AMG-specific control unit to control the three-stage ESP, manual transmission mode, Adaptive Damping System, AMG Performance exhaust, and the vehicle ride height. Of course, the GLE Coupe will have a smaller cargo area and a decrease in rear visibility compared to the GLE SUV.

As with lesser, non-AMG versions of the GLE, this new model features a frugal mild-hybrid system that makes stop-start feel more seamless. The 4.0-liter V8 also features cylinder deactivation for improved fuel economy. That mild-hybrid system also powers the AMG Active Ride Control roll stabilization, which improves ride comfort and eliminates body roll through corners using the air suspension and adaptive damping adjustments. Drivers can place the dampers in Comfort, Sport, and Sport+ modes while the Dynamic Select modes include Comfort, Sport, Sport+, Individual, Race, Trail, and Sand.

Official pricing will be announced closer to when the car is expected to arrive at dealerships in Fall 2020. The GLE 63 S Coupe will cost more than the standard GLE 63 S and should cost around $113,000.
