2021 Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S Smashes Porsche's Nurburgring Record

AMG didn't let Porsche have the record for long.

A few months ago, Porsche announced changes to the Panamera Turbo's chassis and powertrain, resulting in a new Nurburgring lap record for executive luxury cars. The Panamera lapped the Green Hell in seven minutes and 29.81 seconds, beating the previous 7:30.11 record set by the AMG GT63 S. The folks from Affalterbach were not pleased by this news, so they decided to make improvements to the 2021 Mercedes-AMG GT63 S to take back the record from Porsche.

After teasing the new record attempt, Mercedes just published the official times from the run. The 2021 GT63 S set official times of 7:23.009 for the 12.8-mile-long version (without the straight-line measurement for track section T13) and 7:27.800 for the 12.944-mile-long complete track (including straight-line measurement). In other words, the Porsche Panamera has been dethroned as the fastest executive car.

The GT63 S managed to recapture the record without any power increases. It still generates 630 horsepower from a 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine, sending power to 4MATIC all-wheel-drive through a nine-speed automatic transmission. The car features plenty of performance features that helped it achieve this lap time, including active rear-axle steering, an electronically-controlled limited-slip differential, and the AMG DYNAMICS agility program.

This particular example also included the optional AMG Aerodynamics Package that increases stability at higher speeds. During the run, the car wore Michelin Pilot Sport Cup2 tires, which are available for customers to order as an option.

AMG development engineer Demian Schaffert was able to shave off nearly three seconds from the GT's time thanks to newly-tuned elastokinematics and other fine-tuning changes. For those who might seek to challenge AMG's lap record claim, the run was recorded by 3rd party experts, Wige Solutions, and certified by an independent notary.

"Even though I've been accompanying our GT63 through its development for several years now, it's always impressive to see the wide spread we have been able to achieve with this exclusive vehicle. This is especially true after the recent slight revision. On the one hand, the four-door coupe is comfortable and equipped with many intelligent safety features for everyday driving, and on the other hand, it offers this extremely high level of driving dynamics and precision, which we have now been able to demonstrate once again on the demanding Nordschleife," said Schaffert.
