Production has already begun on the 2021 Polestar 2, the second model from Volvo's new performance luxury brand. Unlike the Polestar 1, which is powered by a plug-in hybrid drivetrain, the Polestar 2 is an all-electric rival for the Tesla Model 3. When it was first revealed, Polestar only gave pricing for the Launch Edition (the first 12 months of production), which started at $63,000 minus a $7,500 federal EV tax credit.
This was significantly more than even the priciest Tesla Model 3 Performance but we knew a less expensive version was on the way. Polestar has finally announced pricing for the standard 2021 Polestar 2. It starts at $59,900 in the United States.
"We are quite enthusiastic to announce the US pricing for the Polestar 2," said Gregor Hembrough, Head of Polestar USA. "The MSRP is lower than we originally targeted, and will be extended to all of our current reservation holders. With an online purchase option, lower pricing, considerable tax incentives, and production already underway, the Polestar 2 is well-positioned for a successful entry into the US market."
Polestar says the price is below state incentive thresholds for California and New York, meaning the car qualifies for an additional $2,000 tax incentives. When combined with the federal tax credit, residents in these states can get as much as $9,500 in tax incentives, effectively bringing the price down to $50,400.
There are a few options available for the car including a Performance Pack for $5,000, Nappa Leather Interior for $4,000, 20-inch wheels for $1,200, and metallic paint colors: $1,200. Done up with all of the options, a Polestar 2 can get up to $71,300 (or $61,800 with California or NY incentives). The Polestar 2 is powered by a 78 kWh battery pack sending 408 horsepower and 487 pound-feet of torque to all four wheels.
Production began in March and US deliveries are set to begin in Summer 2020. The car is currently available to purchase on Polestar.com and physical retail showrooms called Polestar Spaces will be opened later this year.
