They were only launched last year, but the Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrids are receiving some notable improvements for model year 2021. Following last week's debut of the 2021 Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid, which has a total of 689 horsepower partly thanks to a bigger battery, it's now the electrified Cayenne SUV and Coupe's turn. Both now have increased performance and electric range. Last year's models had a 14.1-kWh battery, but the 2021 models have an even more powerful 17.9-kWh on tap.

Porsche also says this increases all-electric range up to 30 percent. The E-Hybrid's powertrain, meanwhile, carries over unchanged. The 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 with an electric motor still produces the same 455 hp, while the Turbo S E-Hybrid retains the twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 and its own electric motor for a combined total of 670 hp.

However, these new Cayenne hybrids are still about half a year away from their US market launch and EPA-estimated electric-only range data is not yet available. In other words, it remains unknown just how much the additional 3.8-kWh of juice will provide owners in terms of miles.

Official pricing for the US has also not been provided, though, for reference, the Cayenne E-Hybrid had an MSRP of $81,100 last year. The Turbo S E-Hybrid set owners back by $163,200. If you couldn't afford either last year, don't expect anything to change. Porsche has also made some additional new model year improvements, including optimized driving modes for the Sport Chrono Package.

In E-Charge mode, where the combustion engine charges the battery, there's an adjusted charging strategy where the state of battery charge has been reduced from 100 to 80 percent. This is important because, like in a smartphone battery, the vehicle's battery charges far more slowly and inefficiently when the battery's state of charge reaches about 80 percent or higher.

Essentially, the refined strategy ensures a full power recuperation is available at all times. In Sport and Sport Plus modes, the battery is charged to a minimum level to provide the right amount of boost options for the sporty driving style owners typically prefer.
