2500 and 3500 owners also get a new color option.
Truck tailgates were originally a pretty simple component, but they have become far more complicated and advanced in recent years. GMC's MultiPro Tailgate offered six different configurations (plus built-in speakers), and the option proved so popular, General Motors decided to expand it to the Chevrolet brand. Renamed as the Multi-Flex Tailgate, this feature first arrived on the 2021 Silverado 1500 but will now come optionally on the 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD and 3500HD.
"Whether a customer needs a standing workstation or an easier load-in for materials, the Multi-Flex Tailgate configurations activate using a key fob or two tailgate-mounted buttons, one for the full gate and another for the inner gate," says Chevrolet. "There is also a power tailgate button on the instrument panel."
Pricing for the Multi-Flex Tailgate is not yet available, but Chevy says it will be available for all 2022 Silverado HD trim levels, including the base WT (Work Truck). The more well-optioned LT, LTZ, and High Country trims receive a power up/down tailgate option, which Chevy says is a segment-exclusive feature. Like its GMC counterpart, the Chevy Multi-Flex Tailgate offers a secondary folding section in the middle and a deployable flap on its inner portion. These components serve various functions as a bed stop, step, or workplace.
Among the various tailgate option, the Multi-Flex and MultiPro tailgates seem the most versatile. Ford's tailgate offers a bed step, some measuring lines, and grip tool cutouts, while the Ram Multifunction tailgate offers a split down the middle for easier access to the bed. Ford is currently working on a new offering called the Flexbed, which could better compete with GM.
Aside from the new tailgate, the changes to the 2022 Silverado HD lineup are minimal. The remainder of the features will carry over from the 2021 model, with a new Greenstone Metallic color being the only other new addition. Chevy says the 2022 Silverado 2500HD and 3500HD will arrive at dealerships in summer 2021.
