The Dodge Durango is still around in its current form. We know Dodge is working on a successor that should be ready to go in the near future. For now, the third generation, which dates back to 2011, soldiers on generally unchanged for the 2022 model year. There is, however, a new trim level aimed at consumers who desire a three-row, V8-powered premium SUV and who may balk at the new Jeep Grand Cherokee L's price tag.

The Durango R/T Plus, which we learned about in November, will carry a starting price tag of $53,820, including the $1,595 destination charge, for RWD configurations. It's not exactly cheap but a comparatively equipped Grand Cherokee L costs a few thousand more. Upgrading to AWD adds $2,600 to the Durango R/T Plus's price.

This new Durango trim comes standard with the Plus package, which includes an upgraded instrument panel, suede headliner, Nappa leather seats, a sunroof, and a 19-speaker Harmon Kardon audio system. Standard safety systems include Forward-Collision Warning-Plus, Adaptive Cruise Control, Blind-Spot Detection, Advanced Brake Assist, and Lane Departure Warning.

The online configurator further allows buyers to tack on goodies like Mopar exterior stripes ($1,195), red Brembo brakes with SRT Performance pads ($395), and a rear-seat entertainment system ($1,995). Four exterior colors are on offer: DB Black, White Knuckle, Octane Red, and Destroyer Gray. Regardless of chosen features, the Durango R/T Plus is available with just one engine: the familiar 5.7-liter Hemi V8 that makes 360 horsepower and 390 lb-ft of torque.

A ZF-sourced eight-speed automatic gearbox routes power to either the rear or all four wheels. Dodge is also making available the $4,995 Tow N' Go Package that includes a 20-inch aluminum spare wheel, a Class IV receiver-hitch, high-performance exhaust and suspension, upgraded steering, the Quadra-Trac on-demand 4WD system, and trailer brake controller. Towing? Try an 8,700-pound maximum capacity.

For comparison's sake, the new 2022 Grand Cherokee L Overland and Summit trims, when comparatively equipped, cost no less than $54,000 and $58,060, respectively - and that's without the optional V8. Both come standard with the 3.6-liter V6.
