The Blue Oval also revealed a new EcoBoost Mustang package called Coastal Limited Edition.
Historic Ford Mustang names start with the GT (no one is preserving LXs), and moves through Mach 1, Boss and GT350. But the king of the hill has always been the Shelby GT500. The latest was introduced at the 2019 Detroit Auto Show, going on sale in 2020 with a 5.2-liter supercharged Predator V8 making 760 hp and 625 lb-ft of torque. In short, it was the best and most powerful ponycar ever created.
For 2022, Ford is adding a new model called the GT500 Heritage Edition, along with a new regular Mustang called Coastal Limited Edition. Next year will also see a new Ford Performance paint color named Code Orange, just for the GT500. It will join a purple, several blues, green metallic and gray metallic, and another orange called Cyber.
"You enthusiasts are part of the lifestyle, part of the energy that surrounds people gathering together around cars. But part of its also about the personalization that we do over those years," said Mustang marketing manager Jim Owens. "You want to make it your Mustang. It's not just about that performance aspect, it's about personalization and appearance. We're proud to continue that into 2022."
Starting with the big fella, the Heritage Edition harkens back to 1967 with noted Texan Carroll Shelby taking his already monstrous GT350 and shoehorning in a modified 428-cubic-inch V8. Shelby said it was the first car he was really proud of. For the record, 5.2-liters converts to just 317 cubic inches, but when you add a 161-cubic-inch supercharger, things get interesting quickly.
The new GT500 will feature a limited run of Heritage Edition fastbacks painted in Brittany Blue with two different Wimbledon White stripe packages. The optional version is called Painted Over The Top and the standard is Vinyl Over The Top, which also features special side stripes with the GT500 logo.
You can order the 2022 Shelby GT500 stating Monday, November 15. Vehicles will go on sale officially in the spring. The base GT500 will start at $77,260 including destination and the gas guzzler tax. The Heritage Edition package adds $2,140 to the price while the hand-painted stripes add $12,140.
The 2022 Ford Mustang Coastal Limited Edition "embodies the freedom the legendary Ford nameplate has always embodied, yet uniquely appointed for those who want even more style for their shoreline driving adventures." It comes with 19-inch wheels dark aluminum wheels, a black grille, pedestal rear spoiler, vinyl side stripes and Coastal lighted sill plate.
"This Coastal Edition gives you a little different flair. It'll only be available in Rapid Red, Cyber Orange and Brittany Blue," said Owens. "Some of those lighter coastal colors that you might see heading up and down the coast. We're extremely proud of it.
Coastal Edition orders open the same day as the GT500, next Monday, and will go on sale in spring. The Coastal is based on the EcoBoost Mustang meaning 310 hp from a turbocharged four. It starts at $35,415 including destination and the limited-edition package.
