In one of the most anticipated and teased brand reveals ever, the 2022 GMC Hummer returns, looking much different than the last time we saw it. No longer based on a military vehicle (or a re-bodied Chevy Tahoe or Colorado), the new Hummer becomes the first all-electric vehicle in GMC's lineup, built on General Motor's new Ultium Drive architecture. GMC first announced the Hummer EV Edition 1, which includes the most potent three-motor e4WD drive system.

The range-topping three-motor system produces a GM-estimated 1,000 horsepower and 11,500 lb-ft of torque, plus an estimated driving range of over 350 miles. With 800-volt DC public fast charging, the Hummer can recover nearly 100 miles of range in just 10 minutes. It will also be the first GMC model to borrow the SuperCruise system from Cadillac, enabling more than 200,000 miles of hands-free driving on certain roads.

The Hummer is clearly distinguishable from other GMC models and pays homage to its heritage. The truck "reimagines an instantly-recognizable silhouette for a modern, all-electric future," said Phil Zak, design executive director. "Its design visually communicates extreme capability, which is reinforced with rugged architectural details offered with a premium, well-executed, and appointed interior."

Inside, the GMC Hummer strays far from its military origins with a futuristic cabin. All trims include a standard Infinity Roof with removable transparent Sky Panels that store in the "frunk" cargo area. Premium materials surround the infotainment system, highlighted by a 13.4-inch touchscreen and a 12.3-inch driver information center display. At the back, a rear drop glass window and power tonneau cover also come standard, as does GMC's MultiPro Tailgate with six functional positions.

GMC says the Hummer comes with an available Watts to Freedom feature, which unleashes the electric propulsion system's full power and enables a three-second 0-60 mph time. Drivers also have access to a Drive Mode Control feature that can alter the torque split between the front and rear wheels and raise the Adaptive Ride Control by up to two inches.

A lower two-motor drive system serves as the base powertrain option, and it can also come equipped with Adaptive Air Ride and a 4 Wheel Steer system with CrabWalk. GMC did not specify how much power or driving range you will get with the two-motor models. The three-motor model adds torque vectoring plus the Watts to Freedom Feature.

As you'd expect from a vehicle wearing the Hummer badge, this new model is highly capable off-road. "We had one goal for Hummer EV: Build the most capable factory truck - ever," said Al Oppenheiser, GMC Hummer chief engineer. "It's an absolute off-road beast with a unique e4WD drive system that provides maneuverability, unlike anything GM has ever offered before."

The truck rides on 35-inch Goodyear Wrangler All Territory MT tires as-standard with room for 37-inch tires on the aftermarket. These tires help the Hummer scale 18-inch verticals and ford through water that is more than two feet deep. GMC covered the underbody with steel plates to protect it from damage, and new front and rear underbody cameras with live "virtual spotter" views should help avoid any off-road obstacles.

Off-road enthusiasts will love the Hummer's off-road widgets, which show information on the screen, including torque output, differential locker engagement, tire pressure, pitch and roll angles, a drift gauge, friction circle, and torque vectoring.

Production begins in late 2021 at GM's Factory ZERO Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly Center. This 40-year-old facility was recently repurposed and retooled as part of a $2.2-billion investment to build electric vehicles.

Pricing for the base Hummer EV2 starts at $79,995 with the two-motor drive system, though this model won't be available until Spring 2024. An EV2x trim costs $89,995, adding Adaptive Air Ride, an Extract Mode, and the CrabWalk function. The mid-level model arrives in Spring 2023. In fall 2022, the EV3x model will arrive with the three-motor drive system, torque vectoring, and Watts to Freedom for $99,995. Additional trims will be added in future model years.

If you want to be an early adopter, the 2022 Hummer EV Edition 1 will arrive first costing $112,595. This top trim includes the three-motor system, Super Cruise with three years of service, high-definition surround vision, digital key, and more. Every Edition 1 model gets a white exterior, Lunar Horizon interior, and special "Edition 1" interior badging.
