The latest generation Hyundai Tucson is certainly a stunner. Parked next to just about any other compact crossover, the Tucson is the one eyes will naturally drift towards. Along with the pure combustion engine and hybrid options, there's a new plug-in hybrid variant for the upcoming model year and the EPA has just released its impressive fuel economy stats. In short, the figures are better than what was predicted.

Thanks to the 13.8 kWh battery, the Tucson PHEV can travel up to 33 miles in all-electric mode. Previously, it was believed 31 miles would be the maximum. Bear in mind the Tucson PHEV's bigger brother, the Santa Fe PHEV, shares this battery but can reach a maximum of two miles less in EV mode.

Combined all-electric range comes to 35 miles and 80 MPGe when you factor in electrification. Total range including the gasoline engine is 420 miles.

As a reminder, the Tucson PHEV packs a 1.6-liter T-GDI Smartstream engine linked to a 66.9-kW electric motor and a 13.8-kWh lithium-polymer battery. Total output comes to a solid 261 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. That power is directed to all four corners via a standard all-wheel-drive system through a six-speed automatic transmission.

Minimizing drag was important for obvious reasons, so engineers equipped the crossover with an active air flap capable of adjusting the air intakes depending on a variety of factors, including engine coolant temperature and speed.

Owners further have the option of charging it like a pure battery-electric thanks to the 7.2-kWh on-board charger. This can be done either through an EV charging station or even a home wall box. Cargo space is generous despite the battery pack's inclusion with up to 31.9 cubic feet when the rear seats are up and 71.8 cubic feet when folded flat. Rear passengers have 39.5 inches of legroom. Up front, a 10.25-inch touchscreen is standard.

Official pricing still hasn't been announced but we expect this information to be available very soon as sales should be getting underway in the coming few weeks.
