While the Grand Wagoneer Concept has been stealing the spotlight of late, Jeep is also preparing a facelift for its entry-level Compass crossover. In Europe, the 2021 Jeep Compass was updated with a new turbocharged engine and a dual-clutch automatic transmission, but the 2022 model will be getting a fresh new design.

Our spy photographers have caught Jeep testing a prototype Compass facelift and some of the camouflage has already been stripped away, giving us a clear look at some of the design changes. At the front, Jeep's distinctive seven-slat grille looks larger and the headlights have slimmer clusters.

The front bumper also appears to be revised, but we aren't expecting any major changes. Elsewhere, the side profile looks identical to the current model, while the rear is updated with new taillight graphics.

Our spies were unable to get any clear shots of the interior, but the cabin was fully covered up. Despite this, we can see the prototype is fitted with a larger tablet-style screen for the infotainment and navigation system.

It isn't known if the facelifted Compass will have any changes under the hood, but we're expecting the 2022 Compass to retain the same 2.4-liter inline four-cylinder engine as the current model that produces 184 horsepower and 175 lb-ft of torque, paired with either a six-speed automatic on the front-wheel-drive Latitude and Limited trims or a nine-speed automatic with the four-wheel-drive Trailhawk and Limited trims.

Jeep also offered the Compass with a six-speed manual transmission, but this option was discontinued for the 2021 model year due to a lack of demand from customers wanting to row their own gears. In Europe, a 1.3-liter turbocharged engine producing up to 150 hp was added to the engine options list for the 2021 model year, so we'll have to wait and see if it becomes available for the US model. Jeep will also sell the Compass 4xe plug-in hybrid in Europe, but US availability has not been confirmed.

Jeep hasn't announced when the refreshed Compass will arrive, but we're expecting it to debut sometime in 2021 and go on sale for the 2022 model year.
