One of Jeep's most highly anticipated models has finally arrived. Introducing the all-new 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer, an even more luxurious SUV than the already impressive 2022 Wagoneer. Jeep is aiming for the top dogs here, such as the Cadillac Escalade and Mercedes-Benz GLS. Does the Grand Wagoneer have what it takes to compete? Let's find out.

With three rows of seats able to accommodate up to eight passengers on every trim, the Grand Wagoneer aims to create a "modern interpretation of the American dream" by combining adventure, technology, and luxury. Like the Wagoneer, it rides on an all-new architecture with 4x4 capability and best-in-class towing of up to 10,000 pounds.

Three full-time 4x4 systems will be offered: Quadra-Trac I and II, and Quadra-Drive II with active low range and a rear electronic limited-slip differential. With up to 10 inches of ground clearance thanks to the Quadra-Lift air suspension, Jeep claims the SUV has up to 24 inches of water fording.

Under the hood is the familiar 6.4-liter Hemi V8 with 471 horsepower and 455 lb-ft of torque, and is paired to an eight-speed TorqueFlite automatic transmission. Jeep claims the electronically-controlled suspension, combined with the new body-on-frame design will deliver excellent on-road handling and comfort. An optional Heavy-Duty Trailer Tow package tacks on things like front tow hooks.

The exterior styling is very Jeep-like and that's a good thing, though designers went to great lengths to make the Grand Wagoneer stand apart from the Wagoneer. However, both were inspired by the original in various ways, specifically the clean roofline and a character line running all the way around on each side. Up front, the must-have seven-slot grille returns, only this time it has cool paint-over-chrome laser-etched grille rings. Two-tone black accent roof, a unique hood, front end, and grille, LED premium lighting, fender flares, and power-retractable side-steps are all standard.

An acoustic laminated windshield and front door glass help shield passengers from excess road noise. A set of 20-inch aluminum wheels are standard and 22-inch painted and polished units are optional. Look carefully and you'll see a 3D wheel cap Wagoneer logo suspended in acrylic. Out back is a hands-free power tailgate. Ten exterior colors are available, three of which - Midnight Sky Blue, Rocky Mountain Green, and Ember Red - are unique to the Grand Wagoneer.

Perhaps the most impressive thing about the SUV is its ultra-elegant interior. Jeep went all the way here with genuine handcrafted Satin American Walnut wood trim throughout, a two-piece instrument panel with optional Piano Black trim, and aluminum-covered door speakers and vent surroundings. "Grand Wagoneer" is even inlaid in metal on the passenger side instrument panel with that gorgeous wood background. Even the start button is wrapped in leather with French accent stitching and the shift knob is aluminum.

A 10.25-inch front display screen houses the four-zone automatic climate control (rear passengers have their own 10.25-inch control screen). Above it is a 12-inch touchscreen display with the latest Android-based Uconnect 5 operating system, now capable of over-the-air updates. A full-color configurable 10-inch head-up display is standard, as are Wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot, dual-phone Bluetooth connectivity, and the "Home to Car" in-vehicle Alexa virtual assistant.

Five trims are offered: Series I, II, III, Obsidian, and Series III Premium. Obsidian comes standard with a Black Onyx grille and chiseled metal instrument panel, body-color wheels and door handles, and a 1,375-watt McIntosh audio system. All trims come with "Series" badging on the liftgate.

With best-in-class passenger volume, gaining access to the third row is made easy with the second row's Tip n' Slide function. The third-row seats, available as either a bench or a pair of captain's chairs, fold flat. Passengers enjoy up to 11 USB ports and 75 inches of total Digital Display screen area, such as the aforementioned 10.25-inch display located on the center console between the second-row seats.

Occupants further benefit from the first application of Fire TV for Auto integration that provides access to hundreds of thousands of movies, TV shows, and apps.

Some standard safety systems include Lane Departure, Lane Keep Assist, and Adaptive Cruise Control. Hands-free Active Driving Assist, Drowsy Driver Detection, and Night Vision with Pedestrian Animal Detection should also prove to be popular among buyers.

Pricing for the Series I 2022 Grand Wagoneer begins at $88,190 while a fully-loaded Series III Premium costs $107,980, not including the $2,000 destination fee. Sales will begin this spring though Obsidian won't arrive until summer.
