At the start of 2021, Kia gave us a glimpse into the future previewing its upcoming EV family that will utilize a new dedicated platform. This doesn't mean the Korean automaker will neglect its current model lineup, however. As part of its brand overhaul, Kia's new models will have more striking designs previewed by the automaker's recent concepts.

The next-generation Kia Niro, for example, will feature design cues inspired by the HabaNiro Concept that debuted back in 2019. We last saw a camouflaged prototype cruising the streets last month, and now cold-weather testing has begun to stress-test the components.

Since development is still at an early stage, the prototype is still heavily camouflaged, but we can see some design details inspired by the concept. Sadly, the stylish butterfly doors won't carry over but the shorter overhangs, longer wheelbase providing more cabin room for passengers , and boomerang-shaped taillights will be retained, giving the new Niro a sportier look than its predecessor.

Unusually, the HabaNiro was the first recent Kia model to ditch the brand's signature tiger-nose grille, replacing it with a front end resembling a shark's snout. This will also likely carry over, but the copious amounts of camouflage prevent us from getting a clear look at the front end. The headlights also appear to be provisional.

When the covers come off, the new Kia Niro looks like it will be a stylish five-door compact SUV. Like the current model, the next-generation Kia Niro will be offered with combustion, plug-in hybrid, and fully-electric powertrains, enabling Kia to make a big push for EVs.

By 2027, Kia will launch as many as seven new battery-electric cars across a range of segments, but it's not clear if the new Niro EV will be one of these models that will utilize Hyundai's new dedicated Electric-Global Modular Platform. We're expecting the new Kia Niro to debut this year and go on sale for the 2022 model year.
