2022 Mazda 3 Lineup Arrives With Sporty New Carbon Edition

Pricing / Comments

It follows Carbon Editions of other Mazda models like the CX-5.

The Mazda 3 Hatchback and Mazda 3 Sedan are two of the most attractive and premium-feeling offerings in the segment, and the range was bolstered over the last year by the addition of a powerful turbocharged engine. Pricing and a sporty new trim level for the 2022 Mazda 3 lineup have now been revealed by the automaker. The good news is that the price hike has been marginal. As before, the cheapest model is the 2.0-liter sedan with front-wheel drive that now begins at $20,800, up from $20,650 for the 2021 model. The hatchback isn't offered with this engine option which delivers 155 horsepower and 150 lb-ft of torque.

Next is the 2.5 S, available in both sedan and hatchback body styles. It starts at $21,750 for the former and $22,750 for the latter. This engine, producing 186 hp and 186 lb-ft of torque, is equipped to the majority of models in the lineup. Most hatchback models cost $1,000 more than their sedan counterparts so we'll focus on sedan pricing below unless otherwise specified. After the 2.5 S is the 2.5 S Select Package at $23,100, the 2.5 S Preferred Package at $24,750, and the new 2.5 S Carbon Edition at $26,400. The 2.5 S Premium Package starts at $27,350, and a hatchback-only manual derivative for this trim goes for $28,350. Finally, we move on to the turbocharged models.

The 2.5-liter turbo engine produces 250 hp and 320 lb-ft of torque with premium gas, making it far more powerful than the naturally-aspirated models. The 2.5 Turbo begins at $30,550 and the 2.5 Turbo Premium Plus costs $33,100. The only instance where the hatchback costs over $1,000 more is with the 2.5 Turbo Premium Plus, whereby the hatch costs $34,400, making this the priciest model in the range. AWD versions of the Preferred Package and Premium Package are available, while the turbo models get AWD by default.

As most of the trims are unchanged, we'll focus on the new Carbon Edition. Mazda already introduced Carbon Editions of other models like the CX-5, and now it's coming to the 3 Sedan and Hatchback.

The Carbon Edition is limited to exterior paint in Polymetal Gray, complemented by black 18-inch alloy wheels, gloss black door mirrors, and a shark fin antenna. These changes look fantastic with the 3's sleek exterior. It comes with the features found in the Preferred Package and then adds a 12-speaker Bose sound system, red leather upholstery, and SiriusXM satellite radio. However, this model is limited to the 186-hp engine and FWD.

Elsewhere in the lineup, Mazda has added a new color to the palette called Platinum Quartz Metallic. The 2022 Mazda 3 lineup will begin arriving at dealerships this winter.
