2022 North American Car & Truck Of The Year Finalists Revealed

Industry News / Comments

The impressive group includes an EV in every category.

We're another step closer to finding out who the winners will be for the 2022 North American Car, Truck, and Utility Vehicle of the Year (NACTOY) awards. In September, the 23 semifinalists were announced and now that group has been whittled down to just nine finalists. These finalists were announced at the Los Angeles Auto Show and it's hard to argue with the competitive group. The nine finalists include an electric vehicle in each category. Hyundai is particularly well represented with three products, including one model from Genesis, the brand's luxury arm. In the North American Car of the Year category, the three finalists are the Honda Civic, Lucid Air, and Volkswagen Golf Mk VIII. Both the Golf GTI and Golf R are included.

While the Civic and Golf aren't as groundbreaking as the Air EV, their continued all-round excellence is what got them this far. On the other hand, the Lucid Air is a truly beautiful sedan with a stunning interior and Tesla-beating range.

The North American Truck of the Year category is perhaps even more hotly contested. The finalists are the Ford Maverick, Hyundai Santa Cruz, and Rivian R1T. The first two have opened up the truck segment to a new group of buyers, while the R1T is a much pricier but more capable offering. In this category, the GMC Hummer EV, Nissan Frontier, and Toyota Tundra missed out on a finalist spot.

Finally, the North American Utility Vehicle of the Year finalists are the Ford Bronco, Genesis GV70, and Hyundai Ioniq 5. We expect the adventure-ready Bronco to triumph here, but one shouldn't rule out the Koreans.

"These nine vehicles represent an unusually excellent and diverse group of finalists," said NACTOY President Gary Witzenburg. "From new OEMs to vehicles that have created fresh segments in their categories, these vehicles showcase the automotive industry's current diversification. This year's finalists also illustrate how many more electric vehicles are becoming available to customers across multiple vehicle types."

The winners will be announced early in January.
