2022 Porsche Cayman GT4 RS Arrives As Most Extreme Cayman Ever

Reveal / Comments

It's a 493-hp Cayman.

The Porsche 718 range may not always have been a loved one, but ever since the Cayman GT4 arrived, even the most hardcore 911 fanatics can't deny its excellence. There's no reason to slow down now, and the mid-engine Cayman is now making a play to become the best car Porsche makes with the introduction of the first-ever Cayman GT4 RS for 2022, offering more power and better performance than ever.

The GT4 RS borrows the naturally aspirated flat-six used in the 911 GT3. Power goes up by 79 horsepower to a total of 493 hp while twist grows to 331 lb-ft of torque from 317 lb-ft. It revs to a stratospheric 9,000 rpm and its weight-to-power ratio is an exceptional 6.55 pounds per horse.

Sadly, it will be offered only with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission shifted by paddles or the newly designed gear selector. The new car's PDK (Porsche Doppelkupplungsgetriebe, which translates as Porsche dual-clutch gearbox) has shorter gearing than the regular Cayman GT4, thus offering improved acceleration. The RS will get to 60 mph in 3.2 seconds, which is a full 0.4 seconds faster than the 911 Carrera. Top speed is an eye-watering 196 mph, up from 187 mph in the regular GT4.

The GT4 RS weighs 3,227 pounds, about 50 pounds less than the GT4. To get that weight loss Porsche used carbon fiber reinforced plastic for the front fenders and hood. The rear window has lightweight glass, the doors have lightweight panels, and the door latches are fabric loops as opposed to metal levers.

At the back, a swan neck spoiler cribbed from the 911 RSR gathers air while front-wheel vents relieve pressure and the underbody and rear diffuser keep turbulence at bay. That underbody, by the way, is more than an inch lower than that of the standard car. All in all, it generates 25% more downforce than the Cayman GT4.

The RS also comes with an adjustable suspension with a specific tune in addition to revised antiroll bar and spring rates. For the first time, a 718 Cayman will get centerlock forged 20-inch wheels.

Those looking for more performance can spec the Weissach Package, which adds a bunch more carbon fiber parts, replacing the airbox lid, cooling air intakes, rear wing, front luggage compartment lid, and a few other spots with lightweight components. It also gets titanium exhaust tips inspired by the Porsche 935 and more Race-Tex, which is Porsche's version of suede.

The 2022 Porsche Cayman GT4 RS goes on sale next summer with a price of $143,050 including destination. You can see it at the Los Angeles Auto Show this week and at racetracks around the world next year. The world's finest mid-engine sports car has arrived.
