The last-generation Toyota 86 was arguably one of the most accessible and best-value sports cars on the market, offering rear-wheel drive thrills without breaking the bank for buyers on a budget. Happily, the all-new 2022 Toyota GR86 continues this tradition. With deliveries starting soon, Toyota has announced pricing details for the next-generation GR86 - and it's very good news. When equipped with a six-speed manual transmission, the entry-level 2022 GR86 starts at $27,700.

Despite the myriad improvements, this is only marginally more expensive than the 2021 model, which had an MSRP of $27,060. Likewise, the new Subaru BRZ costs only a few hundred dollars more than the outgoing model. If for some reason you would rather have a six-speed automatic, the starting price increases to $29,200.

The range-topping GR86 Premium trim, on the other hand, will set you back $30,300 with a manual transmission and $31,800 with an automatic. Note that these prices exclude the handling and destination fee.

Once again, the Toyota GR86 is a true sports car bargain. Under the hood is a new 2.4-liter flat-four engine producing 228 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque, up from 205 hp/156 lb-ft in the last-generation model. Naturally, power is sent to the rear wheels only. With a curb weight of 2,811 pounds on the manual version, the GR86 is one of the lightest sports cars on the market.

This combination of low weight, rear-wheel drive, and a standard manual transmission makes the GR86 a pure driver's car that's both affordable and fun. As standard, the 2022 Toyota GR86 rides on 17-inch, ten-spoke alloys wrapped in Michelin Primacy HP tires, while the interior is equipped with six-way adjustable fabric seats, an eight-inch touchscreen, and a six-speaker sound system. Upgrading to the GR Premium trim adds larger 18-inch alloy wheels with Michelin Pilot Sport 4, a large ducktail spoiler, heated suede leather seats, and a leather steering wheel.

The 2022 Toyota GR86 will arrive in US dealers this December.
