Last year, Toyota introduced a new off-road-focused Trail trim for the popular Tacoma pickup aimed at outdoor enthusiasts, with more rugged styling, extra storage, and improved off-road performance at a cheaper price than the hardcore TRD Pro.

For 2022, the Tacoma Trail has been upgraded with taller coil springs that lift the front suspension by 1.1 inches and increases the approach angle to 34 degrees. Thanks to a spacer between the rear axle housing and leaf springs, the rear suspension has been raised by 0.5 inches, increasing the departure angle to 23.6 degrees. The breakover angle is also improved to 26.4 degrees.

Based on the 4x4 SR5 Double Cab, the Tacoma Trail Edition is equipped with a standard locking rear differential offering improved traction and underbody skid plates from the TRD Off-Road trim.

To distinguish it from the regular Tacoma, the Trail Edition is available in four exclusive exterior colors. Lunar Rock is new for 2022, while the Army Green, Midnight Black Metallic, and Super White colors carry over from last year. Other new styling enhancements include a Trail Edition badge on the rear tailgate and body-colored rear bumpers. Previously available for the TRD Pro, a retro-inspired grille is available for the first time on the Tacoma Trail Edition with bronze lettering. This is complemented by new wheels with a bronze finish and a 0.5-inch wider track wrapped in new Goodyear all-terrain tires.

For added versatility, there's also a 120-V power outlet in the bed along with lockable bed storage that doubles as a cooler. As standard, the 2022 Toyota Tacoma Trail Edition is powered by a 3.5-liter V6 engine producing 278 horsepower and 265 lb-ft of torque, paired with a six-speed automatic transmission.

Inside, the Tacoma Trail Edition is generously equipped with a 10-way power-adjustable driver's seat featuring 2-way power lumbar support, dual-zone automatic climate control, and all-weather floor mats. For the Trail Edition, the black fabric seats feature unique tan stitching. In terms of tech, the standard eight-inch touchscreen features Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa support, and a six-speaker sound system is equipped as standard.

As part of the Toyota Sensing package, the Tacoma Trail Edition comes with a slew of driver assists and safety tech including pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, high-speed dynamic radar cruise control, lane departure alert, and automatic high beams. No pricing details were announced, but the 2021 Toyota Tacoma Trail Edition starts at $34,005 for reference. Sales will start this fall.
