Australia is one of the biggest markets for the Ford Ranger and the Ford Ranger Raptor. It's also the nation that leads the development of these crucial global models. That's why the land down under is getting access to these new models before the rest of the world. But there are some benefits as we at least get to learn more exciting things about this highly-anticipated model before it reaches our shores.

This week we have the confirmed fuel tank size and claimed fuel consumption figures. According to Australia's Green Vehicles Guide, the 2023 Raptor will consume 11.5 liters of gas per 100km on the combined cycle. Around town, it will drink 14 liters, and on the open road, that drops down to 10 liters per 100km.

In Americanese, that works out to 17/24 mpg city/highway.

It's worth noting that these figures are calculated on the ADR81/02 protocols, which are more lenient than even the WLTP test cycle. On the latter, the Ranger Raptor is claimed to achieve 17 mpg combined, which will likely come down even further as the WLTP is known to be more lenient than the US EPA-certified figures.

The standard tank size is 21.1 gallons, which gives it a range of 504 miles.

When the Ranger Raptor arrives in the US, we expect these figures to change dramatically, and we'd hazard a guess that 400 miles is a more reasonable range expectation.

While the new Raptor uses a twin-turbo 3.0-liter gas engine tuned to produce 392 horsepower and 430 lb-ft of torque, it likely won't have to work as hard to move the sizeable body around as the old, underpowered diesel engine the previous Raptor used in foreign markets. The outgoing model (pictured below) weighed 5,100 lbs and had half the power.

The new Ranger Raptor is said to weigh less, and the turbocharged gas engine will provide more torque lower down in the rev range.

The new Ranger Raptor will face stiff competition when it does arrive. The new Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 is already being teased, and the Jeep Gladiator is an impressive desert-running compact truck. Ford has previously enjoyed impressive gas mileage across the Ranger lineup and the larger F-150, so we expect the Ranger Raptor to still be within touching distance of rivals, despite more power.
