2023 Jeep Compass Gets New Turbo Four-Cylinder Engine

Industry News / 10 Comments

The new motor makes 200 horsepower and 221 lb-ft of torque.

For 2023, Jeep has introduced a new engine for the Compass. It's a turbo-four with 200 horsepower and 221 lb-ft of torque. The upgrade also includes a host of other updates for the upcoming model year.

The new inline-four will be spread across all five of the Compass' trims, each with standard 4WD thanks to that new motor and an eight-speed automatic transmission. Those trims are as follows: Sport, Latitude, Latitude LUX, Limited (with (RED) Edition and High Altitude packages), and Trailhawk.

The new engine gets start-stop tech, which Jeep says helps it achieve "low emissions," though the brand hasn't yet provided figures. On top of that, it claims 0-60 mph will be "quick," thanks partly to a twin-scroll turbo with an electrically actuated wastegate.

Real engine nerds will be excited to hear this turbo is mounted directly to the cylinder head, which Jeep says it did for durability and emissions purposes. Other interesting engineering tidbits include the use of hollow camshafts, which Jeep says are 3.5 pounds lighter than the equivalent solid cam.

An automatic transmission remains the only way to experience the Compass and its new motor, as Jeep ditched the manual before the 2022 refresh.

Moreover, Jeep has debuted the newly standard Jeep Active Drive 4x4 system. The system is fully automatic and will seamlessly transition the Compass in and out of 4WD thanks to a new fully disconnecting rear axle and power-transfer unit (PTU). The system will do so automatically based on drive mode selections and without driver intervention. Those modes are as follows: Auto, Snow, Sand/Mud, and Rock mode on the Trailhawk.

Compass Trailhawks will also get Active Drive Low, which gives the Trailhawk a "class-leading" 20:1 crawl ratio, earning it Jeep's Trail Rated badge.

The "host of other updates" we mentioned above includes a smattering of now-standard safety features, like drowsy driver detection, rear-seat occupancy warning, lane-keep assist, automatic braking, blind spot monitoring, and cross-path detection systems.

Jeep says that these systems, both standard and available, are the most available safety features in the Compass' class.

Other new tech includes an available 10.25-inch infotainment system with Jeep's new Uconnect 5 infotainment system.

Jeep says that the system, also in use on the standard 10.1-inch system, is five times faster than the old one with standard wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. A wireless charging pad is also available.

Other miscellaneous updates include new 17-inch wheels on Sport and Latitude models and automatic high beams on Latitude trims and above.

Jeep offers seven colors for 2023: Billet Silver, Bright White, Diamond Black, Granite Crystal, Laser Blue Pearl, Redline Red, and Sting Grey with two interior colors- black and black with Steel Grey.
