Equal parts rugged and luxurious, the Lexus GX is often overlooked by consumers who require a plush and capable SUV. To keep it appealing in a competitive marketplace, the automaker has updated the GX 460 for the 2023 model year with some minor changes.

As far as the exterior is concerned, the GX retains its boxy styling and controversial Spindle grille but the color palette has been revised. Starfire Pearl has been replaced by Eminent White Pearl, while Claret Mica has been removed entirely. Inside, changes have also been kept to a minimum. Those opting for the range-topping Luxury trim ($68,230) will be pleased to know the Mark Levinson Premium Surround Sound system has been made standard.

The biggest news is the return of the Black Line Special Edition. First introduced last year, it will continue to be made available for MY2023 and is limited to 3,000 units.

Based upon the Premium grade, the Black Line receives several nice-to-haves, including a Panoramic View Monitor that will come in handy in car parks and when traversing tricky off-road courses. Those opting for the Black Line SE can choose from the aforementioned Eminent White Pearl or Nori Green Pearl, which is exclusive to Black Line models.

The limited-run model differentiates itself from the pack with subtle styling enhancements. Unique 18-inch black-painted wheels underscore the aggressive persona, helped by the darkened fog lamp, skid plate, and grille accents.

Elsewhere, the Black Line eschews the Premium's chrome moldings for black trim. There's a black-painted roof spoiler and clear taillamps, too. The innards are much the same, save for new Boulder Gray NuLuxe-trimmed chairs and a black headliner. The interior is also uplifted by gray stitching and Black Matt Ash Wood on the steering wheel.

We're not surprised that Lexus has kept changes to a minimum as the GX was extensively overhauled just last year. As such, the body-on-frame SUV retains the 4.6-liter V8 with 301 horsepower and 329 lb-ft of torque. While it sounds great and is very capable (it allows the Lexus to tow up to 6,500 lbs), it is feeling a touch antiquated these days.

Trademarks filed by Toyota suggest a GX550 is in the cards. This would hopefully improve both power outputs while reducing fuel usage; perhaps the LX's 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 (409 hp and 479 lb-ft) will make an appearance sometime soon. As a reminder, the 2023 GX receives permanent four-wheel drive and ships standard with a full suite of tech.

Should you require more capability, the Luxury trim is available with the Lexus Safety System+. This includes Lane Departure Alert, Intelligent High Beams, Pedestrian Detection, and more. Pricing for the GX range kicks off at $57,575, which is excellent value considering the luxury and off-roading capabilities on offer.
