2024 Chevrolet Silverado HD ZR2 Is Ready To Battle The F-Series Tremor And Ram Power Wagon

Reveal / 5 Comments

It can go off-road and tow up to 18,500 pounds.

Following the huge success of the Colorado and Silverado 1500 ZR2 off-road models, the badge will now be applied to the 2024 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD. The Silverado HD ZR2 HD takes direct aim at the Ford F Series Super Duty Tremor and the Ram 2500 Power Wagon, both of which are the most off-road-ready versions of their respective heavy-duty truck lines. Chevy may be a bit late to this segment, but it's showing up ready to upstage the competition.

Buyers will have a choice of a gasoline V8 or a twin-turbo diesel V8 both displacing 6.6 liters. The former produces 401 horsepower and 464 lb-ft of torque, sent out via a 10-speed automatic transmission with a 16,000-pound max towing capacity. Chevy expects over 70% of customers to opt for the diesel, which delivers a staggering 470 hp and 975 lb-ft of torque. The Super Duty Tremor may have more torque, but the the HD ZR2 can out-tow it with an 18,500-pound rating (compared to 18,200 in the Ford). Max payload is 3,397 (with the gas engine).

Visually, the HD ZR2 stands out as an off-road specialist with a unique front grille, integrated mudguards, badging, 'flow-tie' Chevy emblem, a 1.5-inch suspension lift, and black wheels. Those appearance changes aren't just for show, as all the ZR2 equipment found in Chevy's smaller off-road trucks makes a comeback here. The truck gets different front upper/lower control arms and steering knuckles, a larger steel transfer case, skid plates, a rear e-locker, 35-inch Goodyear Wrangler Territory Mud-Terrain tires, and Multimatic DSSV Spool-Valve Dampers.

Chevy has again teamed up with American Expedition Vehicles (AEV) to create an even more hardcore ZR2 Bison variant. The Bison builds on the HD ZR2's impressive features roster with exclusive 18-inch wheels, a steel front bumper with recovery points, and steel underbody skid plates for the front, steering rack, exhaust, and transfer case.

The HD ZR2 benefits from the same interior upgrades found across the facelifted 2024 Silverado lineup. These include a 13.4-inch infotainment system, 12.3-inch instrument cluster, 15-inch head-up display, and HD Surround Vision camera system. ZR2 models are appointed with Jet Black and Graystone leather and dark trim accents. Chevy specifically chose materials that are easy to wipe when they get dirty. Bison models also get exclusive interior details, including the AEV logo on the front headrests.

Pricing is not available yet, but we should get those details closer to the start of production, which begins later this summer. Production will commence and GM's Flint Assembly Plant in Michigan.
