  • 2024 Silverado HD receives facelift with updated exterior and interior design
  • New 10-speed automatic transmission and more torque from diesel engine
  • Added ZR2 off-road trim level

With a new Ford Super Duty just one day away, General Motors wanted to upstage its Detroit rival by revealing the updated 2024 Chevrolet Silverado HD. Available as a 2500HD or 3500HD, this new truck benefits from many of the same upgrades seen on the refreshed Silverado 1500. The exterior gets a subtle but welcomed facelift, the interior is completely redesigned with fresh technology, there's more available torque, and Chevy has added a rugged ZR2 off-road model.

The base engine continues to be a 6.6-liter gasoline V8 developing 401 horsepower and 464 lb-ft of torque. It's now mated to an Allison 10-speed automatic transmission, replacing the outgoing six-speed box. With less space between the gears, the Gross Combined Weight Rating increases to 26,000 pounds. The gas-powered Silverado HD can tow up to 22,500 pounds with the available Max Tow Package.

The bigger news comes in the form of the optional 6.6-liter Duramax turbo-diesel V8, which has been upgraded to produce 470 hp and 975 lb-ft of torque. That's more than the 445 hp and 910 lb-ft ratings of previous model, but a far cry from the rumored power and torque figures. Towing hasn't improved from the Silverado 3500HD dually's 36,000-pound rating, but Chevy says large hauls will be made easier by the increased torque.

Further aiding in the HD's towing capabilities are HD cameras and adaptive cruise control. Viewing those cameras will be much easier thanks to a new 13.4-inch infotainment screen, which pairs with a 12.3-inch driver information display. A redesigned dashboard gives drivers a "command center" feel, with an available wireless phone charger or bench seat. Other miscellaneous interior upgrades include 10 total cupholders, more leather and real wood surfaces, designed audio controls, rear climate controls, and more hidden storage.

The Silverado HD was not a looker before, but this facelift makes the truck far less offensive in terms of design. New C-shaped headlights add a more modern look with a unique lighting animation when owners approach or depart the truck, while the grille remains enormous. Tow hooks now come standard, as does a hood scoop with "Chevrolet" lettering. Six new colors include Sterling Gray, Dark Ash, Radiant Red, Auburn Metallic, Lakeshore Blue Metallic (late availability) and Meteorite Metallic (late availability).

At the back, the Durabed cargo box offers up to 83.5 cubic feet with the long box configuration. Chevy will offer useful bed features such as a corner step in the rear bumper, bed steps, Multi-Flex tailgate, 120-volt power outlet, and a power tailgate.

Chevy will offer the Silverado HD in Work Truck, Custom, LT, LTZ, and High Country trim levels plus a new ZR2 off-road trim that was teased for a 2024 reveal. In addition to these trims, customers can opt for the Z71 Sport Edition, Midnight Special Edition, Alaskan Snow Plow Special Edition, and Z71 Off-Road package, all of which are available with 20-inch off-road tires.

The 2024 Chevy Silverado HD will be on display at the State Fair of Texas starting on September 29, 2022. Production at GM's Flint Assembly in Michigan and Oshawa Assembly in Canada starts in the first half of 2023 with pricing to be revealed closer to the on-sale date.
